Suppose A is a subset of a topological space X. Then A is an open dense subset of X if and only if its complement X \ A is a closed set with empty interior.

Proof. By definition, A is open if and only if the complement X \ A is closed. Also, every nonempty open set meets A if and only if no open set is included in X \ A. If every nonempty open set meets A, then A is dense; if X \ A includes no open set, then X \ A has empty interior.
