I am not a person that becomes easily attached to fictional characters. Nor would I consider myself an emotional person in general. This game has brought tears to my eyes and touched me in ways no video game had before. If any video game is worthy of the category of art, Omori is.

I haven't reviewed a game in a long time, so if I'm doing this you know this game is something... remarkable.

There are many things to be said about this game and not all of them fit in a single review, so I'd like to recommend the reviews of other users, particularly those by theapesofgod (which focuses on historical narrative and writing) and Mr. Noble (which mostly focuses on writing). I will be covering writing as well but will also touch on mechanics heavily. This review will obviously contain spoilers, so watch out for that.

-----------
EDIT: Since two people so far have complained about there being spoilers, despite the fact that I warned that there were spoilers in this review in the previous paragraph, I'll make myself abundantly clear:

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS! STOP READING IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS!

There, now we can continue
-----------

The game is very enjoyable in the first two acts but becomes unbearable in the last one. Nonetheless, some of the mechanics that will make the game bad are already present beforehand. The game is that it has basically 5 mechanics: trials (along with opinion sliders, both for different factions and your family), oratory, the control-over-Paris minigame, army battles and the dice minigame. The problem here is that the developers desperately wanted to fit them all in, and in doing so disregard the main gameplay loop (trial mechanic), which is the best one by far and the reason why people are playing the game. It gets to the point where the trials are meaningless and trivial during the 3rd act, all to give way to the other minigames.

Oratory and the control-over-Paris mechanics were good enough, although they both have a slight luck factor, with oratory feeling like making informed guesses more than anything. Controlling Paris or not also seems to become irrelevant by the 3rd act, which is frustrating. However, nothing compares to the army and dice minigames, which deserve paragraphs of their own to explain just how bad they are.

The dice minigame takes the cake in being a bad mechanic. Basically, you roll some dices and get points if the dices roll the same number. The higher the number and the greater the amount of dice that get it, the more points. It's completely luck dependent, with the only element of strategy being that you can decide to reroll some of the dices a few times. This could be overlooked if it wasn't because it is increasingly forced into the story in all the wrong, nonsensical places. This leads to the main narrative screw-up of the game, which is that your dead brother is alive and was behind everything that happened and hates you for basically no reason. If this wasn't absurd enough, he manages to kidnap you and, I kid you not, forces you to play dice with him to decide whether he'll cut your son's hands off or not because that's apparently what they did to him. Haven't had enough yet? Well, you're in luck because it happens again at the end of the game, except this time it's to determine whether you'll kill your brother or viceversa and, essentially, what ending you'll get. Key points of the game are decided purely by chance through a bad minigame that is forced in in such a way that it worsens not just the gameplay but also the narrative.

The army minigame has more redeeming features, but still has many problems. The mechanic is introduced through a flashback in which you're forced to lose the battle, which isn't a great way to teach players how to *win* battles. It happens again in a spontaneous streetfight that arises for no good reason and which, somehow, responds to the same mechanics as battles between professional, disciplined armies. Still, it doesn't really develop until it's revealed that your brother also controls a massive army, somehow, and you have to defend Paris from it. I did have some fun with it, but not enough to justify fumbling the entire storyline. Furthermore, it becomes increasingly irritating because it's inherently unfair; you have a limit of 12 units to defend each section and limited reinforcements, limits which the enemy armies do not have whatsoever. You are also unable to move troops into sections if they're being attacked, but you never have nearly enough troops to cover all the possible ways they could attack from, so you have to either guess or reload to the previous day every time they attack a new section.

The worst thing of all, however, the element that makes the entire story absurd and pointless is that your choices don't matter at all. The narrative emphasises very heavily that you are in your predicament for taking evil decisions for the sake of attaining power, yet you are not given any other option but to make them and it does not matter if you try to spare as many people as possible. Not only that, but the vast majority of your actions in intrigues were either accidents, self-defense, or justified retaliation against those who hurt you or your family. This could still make a decent point if the message was merely that power dynamics absorb all around them and force them to commit questionable acts, regardless of how well-intentioned you may be. Yet this completely falls apart because the game accuses you constantly of being particularly evil and bad and a power-hungry murderer, disregarding all that was happening around you. The game essentially has no point other than you and other revolutionaries being bad, just because.

I wanted to like this game and I really did in the first 2 acts. It's still an okay game if you grab it on sale just for the first 2 acts alone. But the way they absolutely botched it in the end is impressive for all the wrong reasons.

This game is simply great. There's no other way to describe it.

The gameplay is fluid and challenging, specially the bosses, many of which took me quite some tries to defeat. Apart from that, this game also has a big exploration aspect. It's pretty much what you'd expect from good metroidvania game.
The soundtrack is quite enjoyable. None of the tracks are masterpieces, but the game plays the right ones at the right time and some of them are really catchy.
The story isn't an important aspect in this game and it doesn't take itself too seriously because, well, it's a game about a cat fighting space monsters in a mecha. It's ok and somewhat interesting from time to time. However, I think the ending was weird and kind of a let down since (SPOILERS) the entire premise of the game is that you need to rescue your owner but you don't do it, which makes you fill a bit empty. Apart from that, there's nothing remarkable about this aspect of the game.
One of the only bad aspects of the game is that it's really short. It only took me 9 hours to complete this game at 100% for the first time and without using any guides. However, it's about what you'd expect for such a low price and I think it has quite a bit of replay value since it has achievements that involve completing the game under certain more challenging conditions, so if you play it and fall in love with it (like I did) and want more, you could try to unlock those achievements.
And last but not least, I think that this game has A LOT of speedrun potential if you're into that. The game constantly has a timer in the lower half of the screen which tells you for how long you've played while you're wearing the mecha and there is one achievement which is about completing the game in less than an hour. The developers clearly wanted this game to be speedran and they put all of the right elements they needed for people to do so.

If you're a fan of metroid you're obviously going to like this game and if you're not you're probably going to like it as well and I know this because I'm not a fan of metroid and I loved this game anyways. This game is simply awesome and it leaves you wanting more. If the developers ever make some kind of sequel that has a longer playtime, I'll probably buy it without hesitation.
I give this game a final rating of 8.25/10. Not buying it should be a crime.

It's a really good game. It's quite fun to play the Half Life 1 campaigns with your friends. The only problem with it is that setting up a server that your friends can join is a bit difficult but most of the time you can just find an already existing server in which you can play what you want to play. I'd give this game an 8/10.
