Great game with very satisfying combat and one of the most interesting worlds I've experienced in a long time.

Great game if you ignore the lengthy boring epilogue, especially now that all the microtransactions got removed. The Nemesis system and the wealth of information on Tolkien's Middle Earth universe definitely makes it worth playing.

As a long time Monster Hunter fan, I can confidently say that this is the best game in the series, technically speaking.
Many of the things that have kept players away from the series have been remedied, and i'd say it's a much better experience throughout.
This review is mostly aimed at MH fans, going into the changes since Generations, rather than going into what you need to know to get into the series.

Online
World certainly lacks in this department. Nobody really uses voice chat, and it's much harder to make new friends than it used to be in games like mh3u, mostly due to the bigger lobbies.
That said, playing with friends is flawless from my experience, haven't had any issues there whatsoever.
Instead of having the online be restricted to gathering hall quests, All quests can now be played co-op, even the story quests. (Every player needs to enter the quest individually first if it's the first time fighting a monster to watch said monster's cutscene which is rather annoying, but minor.)

The game itself
As for solo, it's the best solo campaign in the series, without a doubt, though I dislike not being able to skip cutscenes (EDIT: after a second playthrough this issue is a lot bigger than I initially thought! Playing the game again feels like a drag after seeing all the cutscenes once already. This only really applies on repeat playthroughs, though.) If you're a Monster Hunter veteran, the first half will probably be no challenge at all, but the later game stuff, especially the so-called "tempered" monsters bring some appreciated difficulty.
A lot of features have been streamlined, such as the loading zones in between areas, your inventory size, and some other less notable ones. These changes took some time to get used to, but made the game a more enjoyable experience overall.

It seems relatively well optimized, nothing amazing here, but I was able to run it at 50-60fps throughout at low-medium settings on my mid-tier computer, which surprisingly still looks pretty good.

There's a lot of new monsters, though the returning monster-scene is rather dissapointing in comparison. That being said, the new monsters are very cool. This game really promotes using the environment to your advantage, and i feel as though the new monsters use this to the fullest. All of the returning monsters have been given some new moves and visuals as well, though, again, there's not many of them.

All of the weapons have also been given a ton of new moves and combo's. Even weapons like the dual blades are slightly more complex this time around, bringing in some much needed variety, and weapons like the Insect Glaive and the ranged weapons have been simplified, bringing in some much needed usability.
(EDIT: The Iceborne expansion improves the difficulty and lack of content a lot, though it still doesn't come close to 4u or generations in terms of total monsters or weapon design. It also includes a lot of fanservice for veterans of the series with returning monsters, music and classic armor sets and weapons.)

Conclusion
Monster Hunter fans will feel right at home, even if a lot was changed or straight up removed. The online isn't great, but the amazing environments and new additions make up for it. If you're on the fence about this game, i definitely recommend picking it up.
