Doom, to me, somehow felt both shorter and longer than it should have. It's also VERY gory. Comically so, in fact. I was initially repulsed, but the Big Guts™ are so abundant and in-your-face that I was quickly desensitized to it.

The gunplay and action is where the true heart of the game lies; unfortunately, the game doesn't supply enough enemies at a time through its first half, and that often left me disappointed. I suppose that's better for a new player, but if you quickly kill everything you come across, you'll likely be walking through an empty level, craving anything to melt and disintegrate with your meaty arsenal. Just play the game for the action your first time through--exploring the levels with nothing to fight makes it feel tedious. You can come back to any level later on for secrets and collectibles (which are saved immediately after collecting them, thankfully).

I also feel obligated to mention that DOOM is so goshdarn user-friendly. It's extremely well-optimized, I've found, and certainly doesn't take a NASA-grade rig to run this game with 60FPS on max settings at like 1080p. It offers great controller support (I've only used an Xbox One controller), handles being minimized like a champ, has an accessible FoV slider and allows in-game difficulty adjustment... There's just so much here to respect and praise, especially for the asking price <3

Now for the negatives. I dislike how replaying levels (as in, after you've beaten the story once already) doesn't allow mid-level saving. There are checkpoints to reload if you die, but if you exit, you'll have to start it over. I also dislike the story elements holding me back from the action, with doors closing me in until roboface is done talking about whatever. It can be interesting once, but you've gotta endure it every time you play the level, which blows.

In summation, I can easily recommend this game to any fans of first-person shooters, and I'd say that it's very playable for pretty much anybody who's familiar with this style of game. Just stay mobile and keep an eye on your surroundings, and you should be fine.
