This game is perfect for creating trust issues amongst friends. Like how I'll never trust onion to make a jump over a landmine.

If you're like me and are concerned over the game's mixed reviews (at time of writing) and it's dissuading you from giving it a chance, perhaps giving this a read may change your mind.

Currently the game suffers from 2 things:
  1. The queue times. There are a number of negative reviews stating that it takes too long to get into a game, which is completely understandable. If you happen to play during off-peak hours, your queue could easily take 10-15 minutes (and I'm sure even longer in regions outside of NA West).
  2. A seemingly large number of DBD players coming into the game expecting DBD with a different coat of paint. That isn't the case here, which in my opinion is largely to this game's benefit. You'll see conflicting views in other reviews stating that either monster or teen is too overpowered. Realistically, it's that these players haven't put in the time to learn this game and familiarise themselves with what each side is capable of.

I'd love for this game to succeed. There are so many things it has going for it that I've come to enjoy. In DBD I'd say 90% of my overall playtime has been on killer, because the idea of only being able to run around and complete gens didn't seem that appealing to me. The asymmetry left it feeling like one side needed to be managing a handful of different things at once while the other was left with a lot more downtime. However, in VHS, you'll find that there's more of a balance in terms of what each side needs to do to win the game, making playing teen a much more appealing premise to me.

Here's a short list of some of the other qualities that I've come to appreciate in this game:
  • The attention to detail. Each teen and monster feels unique; it'd be simple enough to make the teens simple reskins and call it a day. For example, every teen has their own running animation. My two favourites being Brett (the jock) who runs as you'd expect someone more athletic would, while Reggie (the nerd) runs like a goof while huffing and puffing. Or how there's the option to bring 1 teen back to life using the book of the dead, and in doing so, will change a teen's appearance, sounds, animations, and portrait to be that of a zombie. The maps, cosmetics, monsters all have the same attention to detail that shows how much care the team has to make everything distinctly unique.
  • The community has been great. Probably one of the only benefits to playing a multiplayer game like this with a relatively small playerbase is that you see the same players a lot. You get to know them better and it's easier to form connections with them. Granted, if the community is toxic then clearly that wouldn't be a benefit — but VHS has a very welcoming and fun group of people to get to know. Come by the Discord and see for yourself!
  • Events are a big thing, with a multitude of missions, cosmetics, map changes, free items, and subtleties that tie it all together. With how many games now view seasonal holidays as good times to load up on cash from their battle passes with time-limited cosmetics, this has been a much more welcome approach.
  • Cosmetics can be purchased with either premium or in-game currency. We've seen a decreasing number of games allowing players to earn rewards through play. You get a good amount of the in-game currency by playing, making it feasible to earn without sinking any additional money in.
  • The gameplay has been a welcome shake-up. Yes, there is still a general learning curve, but it's much more beginner friendly than others in the genre, and it doesn't take hundreds of hours playing or spending a large amount of time progressing through a bloodweb like in DBD to get your character to the bare minimum point. Yes, perks do offer advantages of course, but you can just as easily win a game without having anything unlocked as you could with having everything unlocked.

So I'd say give this game a chance. I tried it close to release for about an hour and gave up on it because I went in expecting it to be something it isn't. Having gone back to it a second time, I've really come to love what it is and hope to see the player count increase once the team focuses more on getting it out there.

This is an amazing game I've sunk an innumerable amount of time into across many different platforms. It's fun to play alone, but becomes a much greater experience when shared with friends. With the impending release of Borderlands 3, you'd be doing yourself a disservice to not experience this at least once.

Endless replayability value from overall a simplistic game. The community contributions and custom game modes really add to the experience. Oh, and hats.

Honestly one of the most adrenaline pumping games I've ever played. I would gladly recommend this game to anybody.
