I very very quickly realised this game is just taking the vibe of antichamber and using that as a backdrop for an interactive list of definitions.

"antichamber inspired", is pulling a *lot* of weight here.

"explore ... concepts and terms related to gender, identity and expression in a playful and reassuring manner." - I frankly do not believe this to be true in the slightest.
These concepts are not being explored, they are being defined. You are being told "X means Y", which in a subject as queer-centric as gender identity is something you *need* to explore, not just define.
Anyone can open a dictionary, and they might as well with how this game "explores" the terms.
I wouldn't call it playful, I'd call it quite drab.
I wouldn't call it reassuring, i'd call it clinical.

You want to be reassuring? Feature real people. Not necessarily visually, but share with us real stories of real people. Feature their experiences.
Let real events reach out and touch people's hearts so they may know better how to interpret their own feelings.

I didn't find out I was a transgender woman because somebody told me "transgender women were born male but identify themselves as a female"
I found out I was a transgender woman because a transgender friend told me about his experiences, shared his story with me, and I realised how strongly I connected and related to what he was saying.

The developer did something special here, and I really sincerely hope this will inspire more people to make similar games.
We need more like this.

This game's microtransactions are per-server.

If you purchase the "Meta Pass" subscription and/or the Battle Pass (even the premium battle pass option), they are only unlocked for the character/server you paid for it on.
Changing to a new character on a new server does not carry them over.

I don't know if this is intentional or not, but if it is then it's really scummy.
I've sent an email to their support team to ask about this, and will change my review if this is confirmed to be a mistake and is fixed.

But having an MMO, with that kind of paid content per-server is such a greedy practice.
I would understand if some of it wasn't carried over (Like the battle pass' actual progress, I guess?)
But not even the in-game paid currency carries over. That's saved to your *character*, not your *account*.

UPDATE:
I was pointed towards a post on their twitter -

"We also recognize that cosmetics being tied to individual characters can be frustrating. We plan to make all purchased cosmetics accessible across multiple characters within the same account by August. If you have already purchased the same cosmetic on different characters within the same account, we will refund the consumed Crystgin or other in-game currency for the additional purchases once the cosmetics are account-wide."

This seems to specify cosmetics, which won't solve my complaint about the battlepass purchase and the meta pass subscription, but I'm hoping that this is just an issue in how they have worded it.

This game is very well put together mechanically.
The gameplay feels really solid and the systems the game revolves around help bring it all to life.
This game is immerisve and enjoyable, or it would be if not for the story. That is, it has no story.

The story this game gives you is "random character X wants to do this thing" and "neighbouring group Y wants you to do this for them", in the grand story of "destroy these things".
I had great fun in my first playthrough, breaking the plaguehearts and helping my fellow neighbours and survivors. Moving into more expansive base locations and investing in upgrades to help us keep going.
Then I destroyed them all. All that was really left was to move on to the next map.
I did that, and... I picked a new map. Kept my supplies, survivors, and it was literally just the same task over again.

This game is grossly repetitive with a story that has no conclusion. Maybe it's a statement, but it's unsatisfying. There's nothing to supplement it, if that is what's happening.
There's limited time equipment earned through challenges, 'unique' randomized events, and a multiplayer mode.
This is the wrong format for a roguelike, but it seems to be what they're trying for anyway.
I would refund this game, if I hadn't gone over the 2hr limit of gameplay. It took me 17 hours to realize that the story was a facade, nothing behind it to follow. Just endless random events and "smash the plaguehearts" before moving to yet another new map. Not because it makes survival sense, but rather because you've ran out of *things to do*.

Great horror game.
The graphics fit really well, low quality adding to the tension. Reminds me of a sort of borderlands-ish comic book style, though more gritty.

The gameplay is a solid and infinitely replayable loop. Each time you fail, you're back at the start with nothing but your own experience and understanding to get back to where you were.

Bug-wise, it seems solid. Neither me nor the people I play with have encountered any yet after a combined 60ish hours of gameplay between us.

The movement is a little clunky and not quite as intuitive as I'd like. The stamina bar is hard to read (it isn't always empty when it says it is) and there's often a notable input delay sometimes, though that might be on my end.

The sound design is on point, which is good because of how important the sound is in this game. You'll find yourself listening out intently all the time. I've had moments where all four of us are walking down an industrial catwalk and someone noticed that there was an extra set of footsteps (5 instead of 4), saving our lives.

Then we come to the part of the game that makes it so enjoyable. At least for me.
A phasmaphobia-like style of monster hunting. Little cues here and there that signify "this enemy is around". I often find it's important to have one person ignoring loot just to roam around and work out what the threats are for everyone else to know.
It's not necessary, but it goes a long way to help you navigate this game if you know what you're dealing with.

Additionally, for those that don't like spooky stuff, there's a role for you! Sitting in the ship and playing Duskers on the monitor. Opening doors and directing your players. Totally different experience that makes the whole thing more enjoyable.

I have already bought this game for myself, and enjoyed it enough to get it for two of my friends. I fully intend to get it for more of my friends if they show interest. I'm very excited to see how this game progresses through early access.

Loading this game up, I was wholly unprepared for what this was.
A narrative-driven deckbuilder (where you actually build your deck pre-encounter rather than scrounge it up with whatever you find throughout each run. Not roguelike.)
Metaprogression outside of roguelikes is rarely done well, but this does it amazingly.
The art is beautiful, incredibly relaxing and not too overbearing despite the effects.
The soundtrack isn't anything too special, but I think that's great. This is the kind of game you REALLY don't want super distracting music. It slips so nicely into the background and is a perfect fit for this game.
The story is well written, though leans heavy on metaphors and symbolism. It's somewhat hard to follow, but not uncomfortably so.

I want to preface this review with a few things-

- This game is still in early access. This review may hold opinions that change as development does, but it's written as of Gloomrot being dropped, a little after. (20/05/2023)
- Whilst the development has been a little rocky, the devs have been undeniably passionate and considerate of the community.
- The game *does* have early-access DLC. Yes. I don't think that's in poor taste at all. They've been introduced as a way to further financially support the development of the game whilst still getting something to show for it. It's purely cosmetics, and they are very good quality cosmetics.
I do not think the DLC prices are proportionate to the value of their contents, but that's not their point.

This game is like a juicy chicken leg.
First off there's the skin, nice and crispy. This is the surface-level stuff. Graphics, Soundtrack and UI.
The artstyle is spectacular. It lends itself to dropping graphics quality without looking that much worse. It's a little cartoony in nature without looking like a dang comic-book, and rather comes off as a very pleasant foray into fictional forests.

The soundtrack is very pleasant. I usually keep my music low in any game, and this soundtrack works perfectly for that. It's very pleasant to sit quietly int eh background and let yourself immerse into the game. I'm no musician so I can't speak to the composition, but I can say I enjoy it greatly.

And finally for the skin, the UI. It's clean, it's crisp, you know where everything is very intuitively. A+ to whoever pieced it together. Not a whole lot to say other than well done :)

Then there's the meat of the chicken leg.
The gameplay.
There are so many things about this game that let it stand out. The base-building is simple but at the same time offers a lot of variety and customization.
The spell system works a treat at allowing full player freedom in builds. Several categories of spells, and also ways to customize each spell seperately with gems. Player creativity is very heavily fostered here.
The crafting is a little slow, but it's designed for group-play and to work in PvP servers. These settings *are* customizable for those who aren't doing both, or even either.
The sun is a threat to you, and it works out so well. Having to carefully plan both your schedules and also your route to minimize sunburn is a great way to engage players in the map's layout to make their movement as efficient as possible, rewarding good player pathfinding.
The game is a really good boss-rush, giving so many different non-linear encounters to face. You can push yourself and rush a higher boss for a really tough fight, but a much more useful power or recipe way earlier than usual to ease yourself along.

When the skin and meat have all been eaten through, though, there is of course the bone. The foundations of the game. What it's all built upon and what you hold onto as you enjoy it.
This would be the fundemental idea of the game.
You hold on to the idea that you are a vampire.
You need blood to sustain yourself (and different types and and quality keep you hunting), and you have natural enemies.
Every living thing around you, and the sun. Your goal is to defeat them, and following that goal it's really easy and intuitive to let those concepts guide you straight into your path to endgame.
You need to survive the creatures around you, so you must make weapons.
You need to survive the sun, so you must make shelter.
You need more blood, so you have to explore the map.
You need more materials for all of this, so you need to raid monuments.
And so the loop begins. To raid monuments, you face tougher enemies so you need better equipment and better blood, which means you need better materials, which means you need a bigger base to support the crafting stations, which means you need more materials, etc. etc.

Once that loop begins, immersion is so very easy, and it's easy to lose hours to this game.
9/10, I'm very excited for what more they have in store before 1.0

Braindead move adding EAC.
Devs ignore the community and despite the overwhelming negativity against the update, they're still going forward with it.

It's one bad thing to not listen to community suggestions, it's something else entirely to turn a blind eye to your game tanking because of an update people universally hate.

HOH BOY.
Where to begin...

I could ago ahead and say what everyone else has said-
How amazing this game is, but it has so many bugs and what-not.
It does.
How you should wait before playing.
You should.
And how this game has so much content.
It does.

But what I'm instead going to talk about is how immersive this game is.
Holy cow, you can really get sucked in. I played from the moment I was able to, and since then I spent nearly 2/3rds of all my time playing Elden Ring.
Not 2/3rds of all my waking hours, no. Including the time I've slept for, 2/3rds of all of it has gone to Elden Ring.
Now, I'm out of college, and I'm unemployed. I have, right now, nothing but free time to play a game like this, and I am lucky for it.
This is a hell of a game, and just what I had hoped for when I heard Fromsoft was working on an open world game. I had my worries, and most of them were washed away upon my first foray into Limgrave. Consumables are renewable (with few exceptions that... might also be renewable, we just haven't found out where yet), and so there's little reason not to spam them around every fight.
Sure, farming up materials and runes (souls) can be a bit of a grind, but each time you go clear through an appropriately challenging area, you usually get more than enough runes for whatever you need. If not, go through another. (or go slap a boss)
That said, if a boss is proving a tough call? Walk away. Come back later. You don't need to throw yourself at it again and again, or fight the same corridor of enemies to level up enough to beat it. You just need to walk away, go find another dungeon, get some new gear, come back later.
The heart of this game is in its desire for the player to adapt. You are going to be challenged heavily if you go through this fight with a single, rigid build. It won't be impossible, but some bosses may feel like brick walls. Prepare to vary your setup.

And also don't be afraid to respec. Once you've unlocked it, there's no cost besides an item you can find around the world. There are about 12-15ish of them, so that's 12-15ish times you can try a totally new build.
Upgrade materials are farmable from monsters, and also some bosses reward you with the ability to buy them too. Don't be afraid to experiment with new equipment.

Fromsoft challenged themselves with something new, and it paid off. Now they want you to do the same. Be creative, be adventurous and most importantly, go at your own pace.

This game is very accessable, but make no mistake in thinking "accessable" means "easy". It doesn't.
The bosses hit hard as anything, and the chaff is hardly a cakewalk too. This is a Fromsoft game, and that, for sure, shows.

Admittedly, I've only had three bugs present in my saves-
1. Poorly loading terrain leading to me falling through the world (at one point into a boss arena I shouldn't have been in)
2. Poorly loading enemies, leading to me being able to run through empty dungeon rooms, where there should have been packs.
3. Large moments of game-halting stuttering, leading to the game falling down to one or two frames per second inexplicably.

These issues need to be fixed, and I've no doubt they will in time. It's a fresh game, and early day bugs are bound to show with so many people now able to experience them across so many varieties of hardware and software. Have patience, a fix will come.

That said, there is only one gripe I have with this game otherwise.
The quests.
Normally, in the souls-like series, the world is linear, and the NPC's locations reflect that. Typically showing up somewhere later down your linear path, or at least in a predictable location you've been to already.
Point is, there are only so many places to look for an NPC.
That way, the NPCs can afford to be vague with their directions and quest dialogue.
Now, it's well known already this game is open world. The NPC's quest dialogue has not changed to reflect that.
They are still as vague as ever, leading to you running around practically an entire continent just trying to work out where this single NPC is, based on their vague hints. Sometimes they don't even give hints. Sometimes they're tucked away in an obscure corner. God knows how the wiki-makers found them.
But, like any other game of this type, you can screw up questlines royally before knowing they even existed.
The quests are really well written, and the ones I found were really fun to play through, but the wiki was a must-have.

And finally, to close my complaints, I have but one more. Not one with the game, though.
The wikis.
A game like this relies on *very* inquisitive players. To track down items, to poke the item at every NPC, to find hidden things (like NPCs literally disguised as bushes or a barrel... Yes, that's a thing, please keep an eye out in-game).
The main downside to a game being this new, is that the wikis are unfinished and unreliable.
Don't expect to be able to hit every point on your first playthrough. It won't happen, even with the wiki.

But, in summary,
This game is a masterwork. Fromsoft put a lot of time, effort, and even heart into this and it shows.
From familiar names, familiar faces, and all the poison swamps you can dream of, it's a must-buy for from-fans.
If you're the patient type and can look past the occasional bug and stutter, I strongly recommend buying it.
If you aren't, and those things infuriate you, I still do. Just... wait until it's patched.

Happy Hunting, Tarnished.

I feel like the abundance of negative reviews is misleading for this DLC. Sure, it's not as good as it could be, but it's only bad relative to what people were expecting.
I would absolutely say it's worth getting, it's worth the incredibly cheap £4.79, compared to other games selling half the content in DLC for five times the price.

A lot of people complain about the moon temple, but I honestly don't think it's bad at all. It's got a unique gimmick to each floor, interesting enemies and a cool aesthetic. On top of that, each of the bosses are really well designed.
Is it as good as the other dungeon adding DLC? Probably not. But I definitely enjoyed it all the same.

Not to mention, the dungeon isn't the only thing this DLC offers. It also offers Merc Mode, which adds a whole new way to play, giving you a level 20 character who has a single life, and rewards you based on how far you got with unique cosmetics (Including a trans pride flag, hell yeah)
