This game is beautiful. Seriously, seriously beautiful. It's hard to put into words just how beautiful it truly is. It's a game that exudes soul to a degree that's hard to put into words short of "you must experience it". Even the mere act of writing this review feels like walking through broken glass, trying to tiptoe around anything that could possibly degrade the sense of wonder that this game bestows unto the player. So please, bear in mind that while this review will not contain any spoilers of any kind, this game is going to be best played right now, before you finish reading this review. With that being said, I doubt that almost anyone would be sold on a game so easily, and as such, I shall oblige thee with the continuation henceforth:
The basic principle of this game can be summarized into a single word, "dispositions". This game is a puzzle game, presented in the form of a visual novel where your choices will decide with what pieces the puzzle is built. Now, that's not to say that your choices will have ripple effects or anything that may be contained in a game with the 'Choices Matter' tag; your choices do matter, but only for the duration of a 'run'. As the name implies, this game is about chasing the titular bad ends. There are 40+ of these to collect, and while that sounds daunting, you'll soon be sucked into the very achievable goal of collecting them all. The button in the top-right hand corner of the Character Select handily leads to a quartet of pathways, with hints as to the dispositions needed to go down them. Okay, now what is all of this about character selects and dispositions? Allow me to explain: This game is played with one character at a time, kind of. There are four characters to choose from, these being the Hero, the Maiden, the Underling, and the Overlord. As a side note, each and every one of these characters has a resplendent personality that will draw you in to not only the overall 'story', but them as a person as well, though I will say nothing else on this for fear of spoiling anything; as I said, this game is best experienced as blind as possible (think Doki Doki Literature Club). Now, as I was saying, while you do only 'control' one character for any given 'run', you are able to set the dispositions for each of the other 3 characters before said run commences (it's also worth noting that you can set dispositions for the character you will be doing the run in control of, but that does not affect anything; in fact, the actions that you take in line with given dispositions will be set as the character's disposition upon completing the run). If it sounds complicated, please do not distress, as I promise that it is far, far simpler in practice, and the game does a fantastic job of explaining it both verbally and through experience. So with the gameplay out of the way, let's get into the less-spoilable subjects, namely art and music, and my goodness what a treat they are. The art is done in an anime-esque, yet not overly so, pixelated style. It simply brims with life and emotion, to the degree that every page feels worthy of staring at for minutes on end. Truly fleshes out the characters and adds to the game as a whole, which is made all the better by the sheer volume of beautifully-crafted images. The music is chiptune but also fantastic, with every character having a couple tracks that add tremendously to the immersion. And no, they never get old. Finally, there is one thing I do have to address. If you see my playtime, you'll notice that it stands at only 2 hours, or 2.4 if Steam decides not to round down. This is after completing the game to its fullest, with all achievements unlocked (DO NOT LOOK AT THEM, Steam has a nasty habit of un-hiding hidden achievements and believe me, you want them to stay hidden for this game). For any other game, the $10 price tag wouldn't be worth it for this little playtime. But I have to say, I don't regret spending a single cent. I would've spent $20 on this game and still been okay with it. Bad End Theater is an absolute gem of a game, and if you decide to pick it up, which I sincerely hope that you do, I promise that you will not be disappointed.
