Expectations for this release were exceptionally high, and did they ever deliver. I have experienced many “anomalies” throughout this playthrough, but to compare the state of the game on release to Cyberpunk is laughable.

Nonetheless, there are a couple things still to be polished, particularly the A-life system and AI behaviour overall; this has been acknowledged by the devs and the frequency of patches indicates that it is only a matter of time until these issues are resolved.

As for the gameplay, all of the locations from previous S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games have been faithfully recreated and improved. So many more unique and exciting locations have been packaged in a truly open-world experience. In my opinion, this is perhaps the most impressive part of the game thus far. Many times I have found myself exploring the open world to suddenly find myself in a familiar location. This is a truly surreal experience that is difficult to convey. These locations are not copy-pasted either, each are slightly different to their previous incarnations, reflecting the passage of time in the Zone. It makes you think “If these walls could talk”.

Within these locations are many interesting characters. While criticism has been raised that the dialogue is less extensive than previous entries, I would disagree. Not just because of the fact that character dialogue changes over time, reflecting even minor changes to the world, but also because all dialogue is voice acted. Instead of a wall of text, much more information is conveyed through tone and emotion. It is a case of more ‘show’ and less ‘tell’. This creates the impression that people are not going to tell you their life story when you first meet them, instead you have to earn their trust and become more familiar with their domain in the Zone in order to engage in more dialogue.

While previous entries in the series were ‘rushing’ to explain all the lore, Heart of Chornobyl is much more confident in its world building, and takes its time to unveil the depth of its characters and the secrets of the Zone. Needless to say, this is a highly satisfying experience, and makes you appreciate the game even if you’re an outsider to the series.

While I did need to buy a new PC to run it, I reckon it was 100% worth it.

10/10, Labour of Love, and GOTY.

Really chill game. Very well executed concept. Hope there will be more content in the future, but I can see coming back to this every once in a while just to bask in it.

Takes the good elements of "Bomber Crew" and "Cold Waters" and expands on them. Lots of depth (ha) and a well designed blend of arcade and simulation depending on how realistic you want it to be. Also, though I haven't tried it out, full modding support is wicked. Highly recommend.

Do you want to optimise a nuclear reactor?
Do you want to create a 1 GW near-ultraviolet solid-state pumped laser?
Do you want to engineer a railgun that can accelerate a 500Mt nuke to 10 km/s?

If you answered yes to any of the above, this game is absolutely worth the money.

However, there are almost no in-game tutorials; If you aren't studying engineering or physics, or have sunk a couple hundred hours into KSP, it is daunting. Otherwise, do not feel ashamed to search up a tutorial - there's literally quantum mechanics and rocket science at play here.

Also, set the theme to dark mode, you'll thank me later.

+++ Game
- Poor optimisation when there's thousands of projectiles (but what did you expect)
