Early Access Review
I was given a early review copy of this game. I'm not really an influencer or anything, just a dev for another GZDoom game. I went into it with a sort of beta-tester mindset, keeping an eye out for bugs and exploits and gripes and all that jazz. Unfortunately, I had a difficult time with this mindset, because I got distracted with just... playing the game?

Selaco was thoroughly enjoyable for me. I'm not particularly in to FEAR, but the extra mobility and weapon upgrades elevated it. Combat has enough depth to it to be engaging (You start to realize that the stagger force of guns is SUPER important), with just a touch of that goofy over-the-top factor (Jump-kicking a dude into another dude, who then hits a wall, and they all explode into blood feels pretty rad).

The effort put into this game must have been Herculean. Big ups to the team.

Played through it on the 4th difficulty. Game actually got a bit easier towards the middle, as I got into the groove of things again (since playing the alpha demo), then ramped back up in the final level. Had a mostly good time, looking forward to more levels.

The Good:
Pulls off a fast, frantic combat pacing pretty well. Killing enemies is pretty satisfying. Ammo/health balance is tight, which I personally like. Music is great! Sound design is solid, the protagonist's voice lines are neat. Environments are a bit samey at the start, but improve a lot after the first few levels.

The Bad:
Initial release has quite a few bugs, some resulting in softlocks (Switches breaking if you press use on them a bunch, mostly). The Dev seems to be taking these pretty seriously though, and it looks like they're being worked on. Enemy sprites get the job done, but are forward-facing and a bit lacking in detail and animation. Combat balance might be off-putting to some people.

Important:
Resource management is a pretty big part of this game on all difficulties. Viscerafest doesn't play like Serious Sam or a Doom slaughter map, a lot of encounters are about trying to take down as many enemies as possible with melee, to save ammo to use against the big enemies. Winning a fight is as much about saving resources as it is about actually killing everything. You do not receive enough ammo to shoot everything to death, and mid-level saves are finite. This might not be everyone's cup of tea. However, if you do like the added challenge of resource management, Viscerafest is actually pretty great.

Cool game! A little bit janky with network play (sometimes rematches didn't work, and inviting friends can get funky if you've closed your "invite friends" window previously), but these issues are minor. The game itself is very fun, quick to pick up, and the potential for shenanigans is high. Losing is fun, because you get new powerups and combo potentials. I hope they add 4 player support in the future, and maybe some gameplay mutators / modifiers.
