I absolutely love / loved this game. Short but absolutely worth the little bit of money to play. It's an amazing twist on the ordinary games you find here on Steam. If you're a fan of the show Stranger Things or if you just enjoy some good puzzles and that old school, retro 80s kind of feel, than this is the game you want! Not much for replay value but a great time none the less. I would highly recommend this game to just about anyone. It's not action packed but it is VERY suspensful in a lot of places.

Early Access Review
First, I haven't been around for this game since the beginning. I've only had DayZ long enough to try out 0.62 for a few weeks and now 0.63 (which I've been playing since the experimental branch became available). However, I'm an avid gamer. At 30 years old I've pretty much played it all.

With that said, I hope to bring a fresh outlook from an old school gamer that just migrated from MAC back to PC. I've been primarily a console player my whole life.

I had watched a LOT of videos on DayZ before I even owned a PC so brand new to the DayZ franchise I am not... per say. Again, I just recently had the chance to purchase and actually play the game.

In my humble opinion, I think DayZ is fantastic. I look forward to playing any chance I can and suffer from severe, unwavering depression when I can not. Granted, I understand all the negativity and why most recent reviews are... well... less than kind. But I think as the gaming communities has grown over the last few decades, so has the expectation levels of its players. And for good reason. BUT, sometimes I feel like too much is being asked. Sometimes players get lost in the hype of what could be and what they want instead of focusing on what is and what the developers are trying to accomplish. Not to mention the potential the game still possesses.

And maybe for an old guy like me it's different. But as I run around Chernarus, I'm immersed. From the moment I login, I already have that uneasy feeling and the need to make a mad dash to start finding supplies and stick to the shadows.

Some complain that there isn't enough happening. Not enough Zombies, not enough players, not enough to do. And true, it feels... quiet at times. And yeah, getting around towns and avoiding Zeds isn't very difficult. BUT, to me, it's that level of comfort, that belief and feeling that everything is laid back and easy going that make the moments when it's not absolutely Terrifying. If I were running into a player every 5 minutes I wouldn't get as nervous. It catches me off guard, it makes me think on my toes. If I was running into someone all the time, it would become routine. There would be steps I would follow, a process for handling people. But I lose sight of all that when I'm only seeing people maybe once or twice a session, which for me can be upwards of 4 hours or more. I never feel at ease. I always feel like my death is lurking around every tree, corner, and police station. And, especially for a new player like me, I have a chance to explore. Make my way to the loot spots I couldn't in the past and really try and plan my next moves. And trust me, surplus or not, it doesn't take many Zombies to be on your tail before you feel overwhelmed. So truthfully, I don't even know how I would enjoy the game if it were too difficult to get around. Players need to have a reason to come back to the game and for me it's the enjoyment of finding good weapons and having some TIME to actually run around with them and use them. Not work for 4 hours, get the loot I need, just to DIE by a horde of zombies or players. Or worst yet, never being able to make it to the loot spots in the first place. It's the scarcity of life, and Zeds for that matter, that balance out the ecosystem of DayZ for me. Truthfully, I do feel like I could use a little more action but I'm still very new, don't have many friends on steam, and don't have any invites to private servers even on the 0.62 build or before. I logon to the regular servers, which aren't always highly populated, and I start going at it.

There is also people that complain about finding the necessary supplies to survive like food and water. As I've mentioned, I'm brand new to this game and PC games in general and I have NEVER had any issue finding the items I need to survive. EVER. The only problem I ever have, and the only reason my character dies from starvation or dehydration is because I don't always know where I am. But once I find some familiar surroundings, I can start to plan a route I know will lead to the things I need. So the issue to me isn't finding supplies, it's spawn locations and knowing where you are.

And I do hope as time goes forward that some of the content that DayZ once had as a mod for Arma 2 will present itself in the standalone. Tents, base building, more weapons, scopes (which has already been confirmed) etc. But for now, the game is still fun and worth the purchase. I can't wait to see how things get better from here.

DayZ was the first game I wanted on Steam, and this is my first review. A lot of opinions, me me me, yada yada. Sorry, this probably wasn't helpful to most. Long story short, DayZ is a very WELL done game and the developers should be proud. If you like open world, sandbox style survival games give it a try for sure.
