The Nissan Silvia S13, introduced in 1988, marked a significant shift in design from its predecessor, the S12. It featured a more aerodynamic and modern look that quickly captured attention, especially among fans of Japanese sports cars. Although the Silvia in Japan had fixed headlights, its hatchback counterpart—the 180SX—came with the now-iconic pop-up headlights. Interestingly, the American version, known as the 240SX, combined the S13 chassis with the 180SX front end and a different engine, creating a unique mix. One of the S13’s standout features was its multi-link rear suspension, a rarity in its class at the time, which gave it exceptional handling characteristics. Some trims were also equipped with Nissan’s advanced Super HICAS four-wheel steering system, bringing surprising levels of tech to a relatively affordable sports coupe.

Early S13 models came with the CA18DET, a 1.8-liter turbocharged engine, but it was the later SR20DET 2.0-liter turbo that earned legendary status among tuners and racers. In the U.S., the early 240SX earned the nickname “pignose” due to its unique front bumper design. The car’s light weight—typically between 1,100 to 1,200 kilograms—combined with its rear-wheel drive layout and excellent chassis balance, made it a natural in the world of drifting. It’s no surprise that it became a staple in Japan’s D1GP and grassroots drift scenes around the world. The Silvia S13 was even awarded the 1988–1989 Japanese Car of the Year, a prestigious title not often given to sports coupes. Over the years, it’s become a pop culture icon, appearing in countless video games and anime series like Gran Turismo, Initial D, and Need for Speed, cementing its status as a legend of the JDM world.
