While the story can be enjoyable the ease of combat even on Hard difficulty can make the early game feel more like a slog that an actual fun adventure. With that said, the late game combat and some of the bosses you get to engage with in the post story can be really fun and interesting fights.

This game is really more for someone who wants an action adventure type game with anime aesthetics and like to grind up characters to hit big numbers and take down bosses. If that sound like you, you'll probably love this game.

The Good: Using the weapons of the 40k universe is a joy and in my opinion these are some of if not the best renditions of them. Alongside this there's music which really builds up moments and fits the setting wonderfully. The gameplay and gunplay in the game all feel great and its a great time with friends.

The Bad: After time a lot of the optimizations have been cleaned up and I find the game much more stable, however I and friends still do have issues at times with the networking and getting DCd seemingly without cause, an issue we don't see in other games.

Overall: I've really enjoyed the game and had a blast with it, especially for its price tag, but I would say the main draw here is if you want a co-op game that is in the 40k universe or you like Vermintide and want a change of pace fora bit.

UPDATED REVIEW: After playing again the performance was much better, the story and world really come together later, especially if you do the extra work (or look up good videos on YouTube). I still like the world and story of Sekiro more, but as far as game play I would say they are both great in their own distinct ways.

Old Review: **Will update if fixes come, but crashing and stuttering are extremely immersion breaking. In some places the game runs great, this is usually in smaller dungeons, but everywhere else including a number of boss fights the performance drops. My specs are well above the recommended specs as it seems many others are.

The game itself is pretty good, It's still not as good as Sekiro but it is better than other previous souls games IMO. The open world nature does open some really janky situations if you don't go the way expected. Finally, I don't enjoy the mounted combat that much but in some fights it feels almost mandatory to use which can be frustrating.**

REVIEW
If your looking for a more chill souls-lite title that has really easy to enter co-op with friends or PUGS I can't imagine you wouldn't like this game. If your looking for hardcore souls experience this game most likely won't fit the bill, it has it challenges but its never been as hard as a main line souls game. (at the time of writing this I've gone through twice now on hard once alone and once with a friend)
Despite missing that crazy difficulty that goes with mainline Souls I've had a blast playing this game. There's lot of secret and hidden treasures to be found, I haven't uncovered everything yet but I intend to keep playing for some time as I really loving playing a game like this co-op. Not all the bosses have been as fun as others but none have left a sour feeling for me so far, I do wish there was a few more bosses per playthrough but that's rather minor with the replayability.
Overall I'd rate this game very highly 8/10, its not perfect and I personally have had some bugs infrequently (though once I had a bug that did cost me a boss fight where I got stuck not being able to ADS and thus fire my gun). This game is worth the investigation go watch some videos to see if the game play is for you, if it is and especially if you have a bud, grab it, you won't be disappointed.

PERSONAL POINTS OF NOTE
1. There is currently no PvP. (I've never been one for PvP but I know a lot of souls fans love it)

2. RNG with world seeds giving you certain rewards can make runs bad or very difficult for certain players. (my first world had almost all melee / shotgun and I wanted to play sniper)

3. I-Frames on rolls are very generous (great for newer players or those who want to chill but it can make the combat easy at times)

4. The stakes on death are much lower, with constant checkpoints, and no real loss on death (again great for chill / newer players but it does make things less intense than mainline souls)

An amazing metroidvania with call back feeling to symphony of night. If you loved those types of games you'll more than likely enjoy this one, if your looking for something newer though I would go with games like Hollow knight or wait for the upcoming sequel Silk Song.

Early Access Review
A fantastic follow-up to the first Risk of Rain, it still has some issues with MP and item theft but if you have friends to play with or enjoy playing roguelikes solo, you'll love this game.

You will lose yourself in this game; it can feel like a crazy mess at times, but luckily there's a great community to reach out to for help. Aside from that when you truly get into the depths of the game you will feel like a god of destruction rampaging across the landscape. If you haven't yet tried this game give it a go, it's free after all.
