Best visual novel ever made, simple as that. Depending on if you consider VNs video games (I do but can see why some wouldn't), one of the best games ever made. The story twists and turns while avoiding most common tropes masterfully. Some may not like the beginning but personally I found the cast of characters to be extremely likable from the jump and the slow buildup made the payoff much better. If you don't enjoy slower pacing then the first bit won't be for you. If you're coming over from the anime, the VN tends to go into more detail than the anime did while the anime mostly just covers all the bases and cuts a lot of fluff. That and the different art styles. For the most part, the anime is a phenomenal adaption that trims some of the fat and it ultimately sort of just comes down to preference.

Only small gripe is that I wish that the Suzuha ending hadn't ended so abruptly and we could've experienced Okabe and her together in 1975. And that the Xbox physical versions of Sci Adv VNs were never localized but that's an entirely different thing.

An absolute masterpiece. One of my two favorite games of all time. Despite the age, this game is still a must play. I only got it in late 2019 and I still have gotten incredible enjoyment out of it.

Want to make a dominant land-power? You can do that.
Want to play tall and build up an economy, focus on industry, and build a small but modest colonial empire? You can do that too.
Want to become world hegemon and take Britain's crown? You can do that as well.
I absolutely love how this game feels tool, you have to build your country up from the age of Napoleonic warfare to modern ww1 warfare. You have to undergo the industrial revolution and build up your industry, you have to pick where you wanna expand and virtually any part of the map that isn't held by civilized countries is open, you have to pass reforms and slowly liberalize your country unless you want to get an infamous anarcho-liberal revolt, and there are fun mini-challenges you can play with yourself too, like trying to meet all of your pops life needs. T

The game does have flaws though; the economy can be broken at times, there is definitely a meta in terms of where to colonize, blobbing in China in vanilla is broken, liquor factories are absolutely busted in vanilla, and the AI will attack you relentlessly for cores unless you dwarf their military score. Still, a lot of these issues can be softened or negated by playing HPM or another mod.

Speaking of; the mods are fantastic and just add more flavor and decisions to the game. HPM/HFM just add onto the base game, it's virtually a free expansion pack. There's little to no reason not to download one of the two after your first or second game. I'd recommend them just for the dismantle CB, which makes it so that after a great war you and the victorious powers can divide up your enemies. Although it's recommended that you try to avoid calling minor powers into these or you'll end up with things like Romanian Indochina because the CB doesn't seem to calculate war score in the ensuing negotiation. It's still a greatfeature to the mods though and adds tension; if you lose a great war, everything you worked for and colonized is gone. There are also good Alt-history mods, there's a really sick cold war mod, the concert of europe, etc. etc.

Highly recommend to anyone who likes strategy games and simulators. You need both DLCs, though. Onsale you can get the base game and both DLCs for 20$ (or for 7 rn on humble).
