A beautifully crafted single player experience with almost no equal. Gone Home represents a new evolution of gameing as a medium by bringing a wholey unique experience through a level of interactivity that few, if any, before it has. Even this groups previous title (Dear Esther), pales in comparison to the feat that has been pulled off in this thuroughly engrossing first person story.
Complex issues and engaging storyline are delivered with the upmost breadth and engagement through a variety of interesting devices. This game breeds engagement through a number of ways that are only apparent upon completeing the game and really helps a game without any kind of real direct mechanics, to stick with you in surprising ways.
Returning to an empty house and discovering the reality that lies between your expectations and the new reality the character is presented with gives an engrossing contrast and really helps pull you into the mindset of the character. It allows you to identify with someone who would otherwise be filled in by most players by sterotypes and assumptions and really lets you briefly live through that character with an immense sense of gravity of their unique situation.
To say anything more would spoil this games impact, but suffice it to say that this game should easily find itself on many a top 10 list of 2013. The $20 they ask for this game may seem a little high, and indeed it might be considering the brief playing time and limited replayability, but those looking for a unique and fresh look at what games can accomplish as a medium, you need look no further than this excellent example.

In this day of ever increasing indie options of one-off great concepts that try and differentiate themselves from the crowd, this game is a real diamond in the rough. Sure, it doesn't have many of the extras and filler of a larger title, but it is truly such a rare and beautiful thing to find such an uncomplicated, (and uncomprimised), good time these days. The lack of online multiplayer is for this games benefit as, despite the shortsighted comments that we see from some of the other reviews, this is a game that is an experience best enjoyed with the other players in the same room playing together for a shared experience like no other. The immediate and visceral impact of every button push is shared, (almost by force) as each kill is given attention through screen focuses of the involved parties as they slash each other down as quickly as possible in this first to 10 battle royale. Everyone gets to appreciate the flow of the match through brief pauses for each score. This is one of those games that is immediately accessible while still offering a serious depth of strategy for experienced players, making it fun to play even with mixed levels of experience. If you have the controllers to support four players at once, you will be hard pressed to find a better way to spend a night with friends than this!

Dear Esther was an interesting art project and not muxh else. There is no real gameplay to speak of other than walking through the world itself (at a snails pace I might add), waiting to hear nonlinear pieces of the plot. It's short at about only an hours length, though you might be able to get a little more out of it by exploring every nook and cranny. Though there is no reason or incentive to do so as there is nothing to collect or achieve other than hearing other small snipets of the story. And even that is diminished by fact that the story itself is simply not that engaging or interesting. Overall, Esther has many interesting components but ultimately fails to bring them together into a meanful experience.

Amazing "Rogue-like" type game. Super challenging and a very fun way to kill some time.
