Probably developed during the worst time of Activision-Blizzard.

To be honest, on the multiplayer aspect, the game is not bad, and sometimes feels really good. However, this had been completely ruined by the hilarious report system that punishes anyone with a K/D ratio higher than 2.0; when a player gets mass-reported, the system often automatically checks the account and moves them to different queues where all the reported players gather, which is called "Shadow banned". If you are a legit good player, you probably wouldn't mind. The problem is that you will not be able to play with friends, or at least, find a valid lobby with them. I understand that cheaters need to be caught and banned but a system like this really hurts my experience and somehow cured my video-game addiction. I would say this system is pure malicious.

On the single-player, campaign side, I wouldn't be surprised that this game has some good stories (since most of the good writers in Activision was long-gone during that period) but I didn't expect the whole campaign to be that bad. First, it's short, probably around 2~4 hour playtime. I believe some of the chapters were only used to fill in the gaps, as they usually formed as a big ass map contained with objectives, presumably tried to recreate MW2019 and MWII's open world mission, though I think it's also because they tried to make this as a "tutorial" of MW Warzone.

Basically, the whole game is rushed, made of nothing but compromises. And why do I have only 5 hours of gameplay? Because MWII, MWIII, BO6 and Warzone were merged together as a single game, which made a lot of things over-complicated, performance was one of them. During my game time, the game often pops errors and crashes, not mentioning the horrendous interface that is both hard to use and shockingly fragile; even now, some of the UI bugs are still not fixed.

I can only give this game a 5/10. It's garbage.

I bought this game around May 22.
It's June 16 as I wrote this review.
I have played a total of 226 hours.
Which means, on average, I played this game 9 hours per day.
I have lost count to time, simply.
I would never thought that this game is so addicting.
I've done lots of horrible thing in this game, admitted countless war crimes.
I downloaded hundreds of mods, addons; my game now takes 4 minutes to load.
I generated around 40~50 planets, none of the colonists managed to escape.
I gathered hundreds of colonists, most of them died to diseases or old age.
I think I probably did a good job, on letting my pawns be happy.
I was satisfied, so did they, probably.
But I think it is not enough, never enough.

I only thought this would be a puzzle game. I never thought this is a serious test for my knowledge of: Human race recognition, History & Culture of different countries, Multilingual understandings, Timeline management, Costumes, and details like noticing a tiny number on someone's bed. This game just made me understand how unintelligent and ignorance I was; I couldn't even recognize who is Persian or Russian.

The clues from the start was really easy to follow, then I realized that the whole first few people were just tutorials, because I was clueless of what to find next after every chapter is revealed. I managed to finish the game in around 10 hours with some external help; never thought that I had to bring up wikipedia every few minutes...

8.5/10 a tragic voyage.

Never thought a game simple like this could be this addictive. Though I do have some difficulty playing since most of my runs ended during week 2, or it's because I'm too bad at this game, I'm not so sure. And also I do wish that there are more arsenal to choose, though I do understand it's already a well published game with a fair price, I simply hope there are more :(

8/10 great for killing time

So far I'm quite amazed that basically every section has its uniqueness, and besides basic movement mechanics, all features are fresh and fun, and... also a bit weird (in a good and refreshing way).

I've played as Mio on my first run, which I've not finished it yet, and overall I'm having a pleasant moment. There's a bit I didn't like is the reversed vertical steering on certain vehicles, I prefer having all axis reversed or none, though it is configurable, thank god for that.

In chapter 2, (where Mio and Zoe play as shapeshifters) perhaps it's because of the quantity of plants (I'm running the game with my old RTX 3070, which could also be a crucial reason), the FPS dropped massively, from 160 to almost lower than 60; my pc just couldn't hold on well on some scenery, I had to lower the quality settings from high to normal.

In chapter 3, (where Mio and Zoe are soldiers with laser pistols?) there were constant camera shifts, from 3rd-person to side-scrolling, to somehow... 2nd-person? I couldn't comprehend well on the rapid shift and thus had a bit of confusion, regardless of what the actual gameplay were (it is still decent), it was the chapter where I wanted to skip the most.

And the pig level traumatized me a lot, to be honest, it happened while I was eating some really, really delicious tarts, kinda regret eating in that moment.

10/10 worth

ONE MORE TURN

8/10

Currently lacking a ton of QoL features, no shortcuts, some nations are missing; I'm still figuring out how to properly play this game, there's no way I can understand the mechanics in 4 hours. But so far I had fun :|

I've never felt so lost in a video game.

8.5/10 It's really short, to be honest.

Volcano Princess is definitely an "experimental" type of game imo, as there are a lot of things I like and dislike, but one thing I had in mind after I finished my first run is: Why "rouge-lite"? I couldn't figure out the reason behind it as Visual Novels or Life Sims already have multiple endings to let you try different route each time you play, perhaps it's for the "random event"? But still doesn't make sense just brute-forcing a genre into another one. The only thing that I'm so puzzled after my first run is to see a screen where I can literally UPGRADE MY START STATS, which is... unusual in a Life Sim, and utterly strange since it straight up contradicts the story of a father toilfully raising his daughter up. (although most of the mid/late-game is just the daughter wandering almost everywhere) Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed the game, but I just don't think our "life" works that way, and it might be the reason I felt strange playing my 2nd run that I never finished.

Well, what I've written down doesn't mean that the devs shouldn't do experiments on stuff like these, but only this one that I felt I should point out this problem; I can see there will be other players who liked the game debate with me, saying it's for the replayability, or it's for the much faster restart/early game. I always ended this thought with the conclusion of "why making it rouge-lite in the first place?" or "why don't you make it another type of game that fits the 'rouge-lite' genre?" Because just like what I've written above, I personally think the "visual novel" or "life sim" type of game simply doesn't need it, cause it has multiple endings and different route to let players go for, which is "replayable" enough if the content is engaging and fun. Also, we have saves in case if we want a faster restart.

Just in case if anyone's annoyed by this long essay, I'm happy if anyone gives me an opinion, whatever the detail will be. also the translation is kinda meh tbh, you should thank me that I also speak Chinese

Rate it a 7.5/10
