Great gameplay, great soundtrack, great community, great developers, great greatness. Get this game; you won't regret it.
I'm a person who has always preferred singleplayer experiences and is extremely skeptical of anything remotely live service. I held off on getting Helldivers 2 for a long time despite a strong interest in the gameplay I had seen because i was worried it would just be another greedy live service and that I would need a sizable and consistent group of friends to actually enjoy the game. Turns out, the live service elements of the game are a net positive. It is extremely easy to get super credits, the premium currency of the game, by just doing a little extra exploration while playing, which is beneficial and fun regardless. I have bought multiple armor sets in the shop and am still close to being able to afford a premium war bond, effectively this game's form of a battle pass. If i hadn't bought that armor, I could have gotten one by now and gotten a good chunk of gear from it. Even better, these war bonds do not expire, so the longer the game goes on, the more options you have for war bonds to purchase and work through. The best part? The game gives you the largest war bond with many of the essential unlocks for FREE right off the bat. It is sure to last you tens and tens of hours. I am still working through it at 40 hours in, though I'm not exactly trying to rush it. This war bond also includes several super credits in itself, making your progression toward your first premium war bond even more attainable. It's not like you'll be clamoring for that premium war bond either, as you have plenty to keep you occupied and interested in the free starting war bond. Every unlock feels well earned and fosters a drive to keep going.
Matchmaking is almost always a lovely time, and I have yet to have a negative experience. There is definitely a potential to grief with the amount of friendly fire in this game, but I just haven't encountered any that wasn't accidental. Playing with even one friend is the cherry on top to this experience.
Helldivers 2 is absolutely dripping with personality. Cheesy pseudo-democratic propaganda-filled totalitarianism is laid on thick with every line of dialogue and bit of text you can find. The propaganda works, too. Frequently in games you will find yourself saluting the flag of Super Earth with your allies in battle, while absolutely coated in the blood of your enemies. (Which stays on your character through missions, by the way! You can have the carnage of several missions splattered across your armor if you stay alive through them all.) Every player character lets out one-liners like it's going out of style. There is nothing like unloading a machine gun into hordes of undemocratic Terminids, engulfed in the flames of a napalm barrage, as your character loses their voice screaming out the name of democracy like a lover they have missed for oh so long.
The gameplay is phenomenal. Every weapon handles with a believable weight that makes combat thoughtful and cinematic. There are also a wide variety of options for weapons and armor, all of which make a drastic difference on how the game feels. An element of this game that is entirely unique, unless you include the first Helldivers, is the stratagem system. You can choose four stratagems before dropping into a mission and call them down at any time with DDR style directional combos. Some you can call down very frequently, while some are long cooldown show stoppers. Frantically calling these in mid-combat only enhances the cinematic and edge-of-your-seat battles that you will partake in against the enemies of democracy. There is also a dive button, which is just as amazing as it sounds.
At the time of writing this, there are three enemy factions that the player can fight against in the ongoing galactic war. There are the Automatons, or Bots, which fulfill a tactical fantasy as heavily armored, vaguely human-shaped enemies that shoot at you with lasers and explosives. When they aren't charging at you with flamethrowers or chainsaws, that is. The Illuminate, also known as the Squids, overwhelm the player with swarms of zombified citizens, known as "the Voteless," while much more powerful units attempt to blast you with their advanced technology. Finally, the Terminids, affectionately referred to as the Bugs, swarm you, slashing with their chitinous claws and melting a hole through you with their acidic bile. All of these enemy types are unique to fight, presenting their own challenges and strategies, which are only amplified by the variety of mission types available and the battle in its own presented by the environment.
Overall, this game is really, really, really, really, really good, and you should get it. See you on the battlefield, helldiver.
