Disclaimer: I have never played any other Doom game. I play CSGO mostly and favor FPS games in general.

I was not hype for this release, did not plan on buying it at all. But quarantine and all led me to boredom, so I watched some streamers play the first 2 campaign missions. It looked chaotic and very difficult, there was so much movement and swapping and dashing going on that I had no idea what I was looking at to begin with. But it looked so smooth. Everything flowed and worked from the weapon mods to the platforming it just looked like a great experience once you got the mechanics down.

So I bought the game and left it to install overnight.

The next day I was still too intimidated to give it a go, playing CSGO mostly. But then I finally said screw it, now or never, and boy was I happy I did.

I started on Hurt me Plenty to get a feel for it, but after finishing the first mission and getting a taste for the flow, I decided to restart with Ultra Violence. I would recommend not doing any difficulty below UV. I died a good number of times learning each new mechanic to begin with but it was completely manageable.

Visually the game looks great. Its giving my 1080 a workout but fps is better than expected, I wouldn't notice it was working hard besides the heat pouring out of my case. I've seen some complaints about how bright and arcade-esque the game is aesthetically, but I personally think it fits so well thematically with the platforming and the 'secrets'. Again I've not played any other Doom so it being less grim and dark is lost on me.

Story is fine. That would never be a make or break for me for pretty much any game, and this is engaging and entertaining enough, although I understand it might diverge from pre-established lore.

"Combat loop" is not as bad as some would lead you to believe. Yes there is a best way to use weapons and mods to maximize your resource usage, but this comes naturally after a while. It feels no more repetitive than any other FPS, where the combat loop is usually even simpler. I feel like there are always options available to me, and there is rarely only one way to work any of the main fights.

I would recommend a mouse with a good number of buttons because I've found myself never wanting to take my fingers of WASD during most fights.

3 days ago I had no plans to touch this game, 2 days ago I feared the learning curve, 1 day ago Doom was all I played, and today I'm writing this review about a fantastic game.
