Having grown up with a classic 1985 arcade cabinet version of Gauntlet at a bar down the road from my house, I was a sucker when I first saw the news of a remake. I've played through a couple iterations of the game throughout the years, none of which really felt like the classic but were all still pleasent gaming experiences on their own. This latest remake has the same feelings of team-work or competition between players I loved about the classic, plus nostalgic game play elements such as the mob skeletons, death himself, or just hearing that "Warrior needs food BADLY!" made the 12 year old gamer trapped inside of me go wide eyed and fall in love! A common complaint about the game so far is that there is little to no replayablity, something the developers are clearly attempting to correct with the addition of 6 seasons worth of Colosseum challenges for hardened players to take on. I also fear that those who bash the game for being short played one or two characters before closing the books on the game for good. Each character plays differently in a suprisingly dramatic way, and with the latest 1.1 update we saw the introduction of a new chacter who fit into the game seamlessly. The game only sets you back $20 (a nice price these days) and that's likely to drop in the near future. So if you're on the fence about purchasing The Gauntlet let me just say that crawling through dungeons with friends or strangers is as satisfying an experience now as it was in the 80's (or 90's if you're me).
