Naval Action is a highly realistic mmo that that focuses on the early 1800's age of sail. You choose a nation to represent, & you fight for said nation with your ships in the Caribbean. You can participate in 1v1 or fleet battles, attack an enemy nation's port to claim it for your nation, or you can do more peaceful things like cargo/passenger runs. By the way, there is both a war & a peace server that is pretty self-explainatory. This review isn't really structured in any way; more or less a list of what I like & don't like about the game.

Let me say first, this game is absolutely beautiful. The graphics of the sea, the detailing of the ship models, the smoke & thunder that come from a salvo of cannon fire makes the immersion of this game. It's also fairly easy for a new player to jump into. I also like how you can choose what kind of ordinance is on your ship. The Niagara, for example, can carry 9lb medium cannons or 32lb carronades. The choice is up the the player, & changing said ordinance of a ship is as simple as going into port & switching them out. I'm also a fan of how you can pick & choose which fights you get yourself in. Therefore, you won't be forced into any battle that will entail your demise. I also love the sheer realism of this game. The sailing physics, the cannon mechanics, the slow-paced battles, etc is what drew me in to this game, & it's what's keeping me. Although, this isn't for everyone.

One thing I don't like about this game is the grind. It's not the worst grind, but you're probably not gonna get every ship in the game within a few months. You get ships by either buying them, building them, or capturing them. By the way, if you lose a ship in battle, it's gone for good until you get a new one. I'm also not a fan of how boarding works. It's basically a glorified game of rock paper scissors. However, I do like how there is boarding. Finally, this game has a few bugs here & there, but I haven't experienced anything game-breaking.

Ultimately, if you like the age of sail & want to command a ship that follows realistic, slow-paced combat & physics, get this game. If you want a fast-paced, arcadey game with quick battles that is themed around the age of sail, this game is probably not for you. Battles can be anywhere from 10 minutes to 90 minutes, & many would see them as tedious. Go play Sea of Thieves or Blackwake or something. I, however, absolutely love this game, & I definitely will be playing for a while.
