Long Story short: Yes, I do recommend this game.

Why? Read.

Short introduction:
Star Wars Republic Commando is a rather short FPS where you take the role of a clone Commando-Squad, the "Delta-Squad", consisting of four Elite clonetroopers: Boss, the squad leader (which you control), Fixer, the heavy arms guy, Scorch, the guy with the "l33t hax0r skillz" (actual quote), and Sev, the Sniper. In the course of the game these four troopers have to fulfill various objectives, such as stopping the Separatists from extracting from Geonosis.

Story:
As much as I'd like to tell you otherwise: The Story is rather irrelevant. It does help to know the sorroundings just a little, but in the overall game it is irrelevant. That's mostly because the sorroundings have either no effect on the Gameplay or are explained to you when relevant.

Sound:
I'll quote Wikipedia on this one: "Republic Commando features a darker and more militaristic soundtrack " than the rest of Star Wars. What this means is: You can hear that it's Star Wars, it's just adapted to the setting of the game.
Regarding the overall sound: The weapons sound authentic, not that it would be hard to make a blaster sound like a blaster, especially heavier weaons, for example the cannons of Republic Assault Ships. Futhermore background noises exist, e.g. the battle on Geonosis and the Fauna on Kashyyyk. Also: The enemies sound like enemies and not just random AI. Why? The Super-Battledroids complain about being hit and some enemy classes keep on complaining about their weapons always being empty. So: breddy gud.

Gameplay:
Oh boy. Now comes the interesting part.
As mentioned before, you control Boss, the squad leader. This means that you can/have to order your squad to do certain things, such as taking position to use a Sniper or planting explosives, so that you can advance to your objective. All this while being overwhelmed by enemy forces, who obviously try to stop you.
There are several points to make, though:
1. Your squadmates are absolutely loyal. Tell them to revive you while under enemy fire; they'll come to help you, complaining about "recommended protocols". Tell them to plant a bomb amidst four to five Super-Battledroids, they'll do, even if they die trying. What does this mean? The AI may not be dumb, but it certainly does not improvise.
2. You are always overwhelmed and under pressure. Just like a true SpecOps team.
3. No medkits. You can only regenerate health at Bacta-tanks, which are rather rare. You do have a weak energy-shield which stops you from taking damage directly for a few hits, though.
4. You are always in dire need of ammo (atleast if you waste as much ammo is I do). Although you can pickup some enemy weapons, you can only pickup one at a time, and that weapon may not be that helpful (e. g. Wookie rocket launcher).

Multiplayer: I'll skip this one, as it requires a workaround, because GameSpy is dead.

Conclusion: This game is pretty fun, if you can survive a little anger, although I'd recommend buying it on sale, as it it took me only ~3 days-ish to complete.
