DISCLAIMER: I used the Memoria mod to make things a little bit easier for me

I've decided to take on the task of completely all the Final Fantasy games in chronological order, starting with this game. I have no previous history of the series (outside of Final Fantasy VII, X and XIV). This also means i'll be looking at the game as the port itself as i have no knowledge of what other versions of this game play like. I'll also be looking it as critically as possible and won't let the fact that it's an old game mask my judgement.

Story:
The game practically does not even have a story, which is terrible for an RPG. The story that we do have is very simple. you control 4 warriors of light on a journey to defeat Garland. That's pretty much the entire story. Needless to say you wont be playing this game for the story.

Gameplay:
You start off the game by picking your 4 classes that you will be using for the entire game, kindof. I picked a Warrior, Thief, White Mage and Black Mage as they were the default options.

The game has a very bare bones battle system. Much like other RPGs, You control four characters each with separate abilities based on the classes they are. The main difference is that Physical classes only have one way of attacking, which is by using "Attack". This leaves a lot to be desired gameplay wise as a lot of battles turn into just mashing a (That or pressing the auto battle button which does it for you).

Mages on the other hand can also cast spells. Final Fantasy has a unique way of letting you use spells. Instead of traditional Mana you have spell charges. You can equip 3 spells for every magic level. Each magic level can have up to 9 charges (depending on your level). I actually don't mind this system, i think its a unique enough and interesting way of using Mana. The problem comes with how you'll be using these spells.

For pretty much the entire game you're going to be just mashing the attack button. You don't have the resources to waste spell charges and it's honestly just easier to. This is the case for pretty much every part except the early game and boss fights. Boss fights are the one time during the game i actually think about my actions. That being said it's still relatively easy. I don't really consider buffing everyone on my team and then just spamming all my high damage attack options strategy.

Outside of battles. There is an Overworld. Every few steps pretty much anywhere you are will trigger a random encounter, which can get annoying quite quickly. Considering how bland the battle system is and how often you'll be in fights it can get very boring. However random encounters don't occur in some areas such as Towns. This lead me into getting the Memoria mod which lets me just disable encounters entirely. It also let me speed up the game which let me complete it way faster than i would have otherwise.

I also disliked how a lot of the points in the game are extremely vague as to what you have to do next. I assume there are probably a ton of random NPCs that give you hints as to what to do next but i really don't feel like talking to absolutely every NPC so i just looked at a Guide.

And there's the font. For whatever reason the font is just really skinny. There's an easy fix for it but i felt like it was worth mentioning.

Conclusion:

With the lack of a story and lacklustre gameplay, I would say just give this game a hard pass. Unless you're extremely nostalgic or want something to do while you watch something on your other monitor (Which i did near the end of the game).

Though despite everything I've said. I understand how important this game is as a whole. Without this game we may not even have Final Fantasy which has birthed some amazing games. But as a standalone game? I recommend you play any of the other Final Fantasy games instead (Atleast i'm hoping this holds true when i get to them).

NGS has like 0 content right now but if you're okay with that the combat is fun enough to keep you playing anyway.
