The purpose for creating this game was not to entertain and enjoy, but to collect money. MW2 is a terrible game created for the only purpose of making more money to keep shareholders, investors, and others happy.
From the moment you open the game, you're thrown into an unskippable 5 minute cutscene, afterwards a cluttered, difficult to navigate menu screen that will give you a headache if you stare at it too long. They push their micro-transactions on you just about every single chance they get. The player no longer has control of the game.
Another problem is the lobby system. Waiting for a lobby, you have no choice of voting for the next map you're going to play. This is a very big loss especially when a good portion of the game's maps are all-around messes. Some maps are way too big. If I play a free-for-all game on a good portion of the maps, the chances of the game running out of time before the top player has even 25 kills are very high. With a map voting system (see old call of duties for example), you're able to eliminate this worry almost completely. Another problem is having to join a new lobby every time, instead of playing with the same 12 people for longer time. The elimination of consistent lobbies has created massive player skill gaps in normal games, it's greatly reduced the chance of making friends or meeting new people online. I remember spending hours in the same lobby with the same people, and those are some of the absolute best memories of call of duty I have.
MW2 is too realistic. In the old days, a lot of players would compare Call of Duty and Battlefield to each other. Battlefield was always the more beautiful, realistic military shooter game that required strategy, coordination, recoil control, and awareness of your surroundings. Big, beautiful maps that looked like real life. Weapons with actual recoil, real attachments, and more. Then there was Call of Duty (let's use Black Ops 2 for example), a fast-paced arcade shooter that required no real skills to play and have fun in. Little to no skill required. Any player could learn a gun within a short time and become a real weapon with it. The majority of the maps were fast-paced, colorful, and made excellent gunfights due to a detailed map design. The maps in Black Ops 2 were designed for players to have gunfights on, whereas in MW2 it feels like they were created to look really nice, with how the game actually plays coming second. Camping is a recurring issue in almost every single lobby on MW2 due to the sheer size of these maps. You have no choice but to sit and wait for someone to cross your path. It seems like there are very few angles where they intend for gunfights to frequently happen. For example, in Black Ops 2's Standoff, there were walled off areas for close combat gunfights, long stretches for longer range combat, indoor areas, balconies, and the occasional obstacle to seek cover from in a gunfight.
MW2 wasn't created with the interest of the player in mind. They don't want you to enjoy a game like you did the old Call of Duty games. They want you to play the newest one and spend a bunch of money, then buy their next one that comes out along with everything that comes with it. I felt like with the 2010s era of Call of Duty, they created each game with the intent of a playerbase being there well after the release of the game. Activision has lost the vision of creating a genuinely fun, enjoyable game and switched it for more money.
"For the full year (2021), Activision made $8.09 billion in revenue, up from $6.49 billion last year. Revenue from digital channels reached $6.66 billion. This was Activision Blizzard's biggest year in its 30-year history."
I guess it makes sense. Having the choice of making money hand over fist in exchange for making a worse game, must be hard to turn down. It is what it is I guess, but I wish it wasn't. Call of Duty was a way more fun, enjoyable, and relaxing game when it was arcade-based. When Call of Duty had a sense of community and player input, I could play that game for hours upon hours. Now, I struggle to play MW2 for more than 30 minutes before I decide I'm not having fun. This will be my last Call of Duty purchase. This game doesn't feel like Call of Duty anymore. I'm viewed by Activision not as a player of Call of Duty, but as a potential sale towards their quarterly goals.
