Fast-paced, addicting, rewards your attempts with mastery.

This is a game for people who like feeling good at video games.
You don't actually have to be that good but you feel great as you improve.

My favorite aspect is that almost every level in the game has shortcuts and discovering them is an exciting mix of puzzle solving and execution skill that makes the game feel like solitaire chess boxing.

Balatro is made with care and the vibes and art style are fantastic. Unfortunately it is severely lacking in terms of gameplay and strategic depth. I grew up playing tons of TCGs, CCGs, and regular cards games and I've always had this idea of "What of you could make a CCG out of a normal deck of cards?" and this is the closest thing to that. I think this game appeals to people who like card games and strategic rogue-likes, but find Slay the Spire and Monster Train too difficult or too cerebral and want to play something more mindless that pays out dopamine like a slot machine.

If you are similarly mathematical, you probably quickly realized that the entire goal of this game is to make your chips and multiplier as close to a square as possible (for example if you could distributes 12 points to chips or mult, then doing , 6 x 6 (36) is better than 10 x 2 (20)). This is basically the only strategy in the game. If you have good mult, pick up a chips joker and vice versa. Anything that applies a multiplier on top of that is obviously very good because it is multiplicative.

What this means is that every run feels the same. Playing flush hands vs. straights vs. full houses do not feel like different "builds" like they do in other card games. There is very slim gameplay variation which is limited almost entirely to stone card strats and some jokers that offer strategic gains over points. Every other mechanic in the game is just "pick the bigger number" with next to no strategy. You can pick zodiac cards to incrementally modify your deck to be more likely to give then hand you want but there isn't much strategy there either.

The game is too easy with the exception of the late challenge runs and is too prone to snowballing. Generally you find something solid early, win every blind in one hand and steam roll the game. You have to play the same deck over and over again to unlock these challenge runs which makes the existing lack of variation even more monotonous.

I think this game can be good fun if it is your first strategy rogue-like, you aren't already well versed in how to optimize these types of games, and the lack of gameplay variation and strategy doesn't bother you. Although If you want a card based strategy rogue like, play Slay the Spire or Monster Train. If you want a similar fast-paced, dopamine fueled, simple rogue-like that has more strategic depth, I recommend Luck be a Landlord.

TLDR: If you ever played Progress Quest back in the day, this game is that but with a nice art style. If that's what you want, then buy this.

The game has a charming art style and it nails that comfy™ vibe every casual game is selling on these days.
Maybe it's unfair to negatively review a cheap game, but I feel that this game doesn't accomplish anything outside of it's art style.

Look at the gifs in the "about this game" section, that is literally all of the content in the entire game. You do a brief egg hatching mini game and then the game auto-trains and auto-fights with essentially zero mechanics to them. You can manually input during these to make them go faster and that is it. You eventually finish a chapter and start over.

It doesn't even matter which stat you train, it makes no material difference. There is gear and classes, but they make no difference either. This game is Progress Quest but sometimes you can click something just to feel like you are doing something.

I actually prefer this game to Balatro. Once the gameplay clicks, it is very addicting.

Hades + Vampire Survivors
Of all the VS-likes I've played, this one is my favorite.

Skill points and gear allows for tons of creativity with builds. Each character feels like they have multiple powerful ways they can be played. Diablo gear system creates interesting meta-progression. Gameplay is more engaging and less mindless than VS. Boons make every run feel a little different. Great artstyle.

The devs have done a great job of fixing QOL issues like making gear less tedious by adding filters and multi-equip. The game continues to get even better.

Only negatives are weak voice acting and lack of stages right now.

I have finished the game + post-game on Game Pass. Liked it so much that I bought it on Steam.

Truly the best Pokemon-like in existence. Even better than Pokemon IMO. Each monster is unique and useful. There are no throw-away mons.
There are in incredible number of synergies and party dynamics to play around with in this game and it is a build crafter's paradise. Every mechanic can has a powerful build you can discover.
The combo and upgrade system are really what give this game depth and make it transcend being a Pokemon-like to instead be something even better.
