This game should've frankly stayed a DLC. It's okay enough, but the meager content is stretched far too much in order to sell it as a full release.

The parkour is a mix of DL1 and 2, which is okay enough, and there is narrative justification for the more outlandish feats, so that's fair enough, but the main city is very small, repetitive, and the only interesting area for parkour. If you don't want to sprint for 3 hours accross the map you'll have to take one of the respawning cars, which makes no narrative sense and isn't particularly fun. The driving feels awful, and until an end-game perk runs out of fuel in like 15 seconds. Again they repeated the mistake of DL2, which is to double down on the worst aspect of DL1 (old town) rather than the slums. Playing this game was at times a chore.

The combat is not as satisfying as the first game and you are underpowered until just about the end of the game, taking many hits to kill even basic zombies. The beast mode is okay but I don't like it. Good utility like the flamethrower, grenade launcher, and molotovs require far too many crafting materials, and it's actually needed to grind resources at the strongly neutered deadzones (seriously, it's like 5 zombies over 15m^2). And this is as someone who compulsively loots every corpse and container.

The most offensive part to me however is the setting and story. It just makes absolutely no sense. Nothing about the map feels like Switzerland. It should've been set in America frankly. The world makes little sense, why are the streets still crawling 20 years later? Volatiles I can believe staying a threat, but regular shamblers? Really? The strongholds make no sense, the monastery is really cool but is never used again after the first mission, the town hall doesn't make sense as a location with no ability to grow food, power and water is somehow still running? I know there's a water treatment facility and solar panels, but it makes little sense for this infrastructure to be working with no maintenance. Which is a shame, because this could've been a great gameplay and storydriver with improvised infrastructure and solar panels only producing power at day/good weather.

The story is really bad, the Baron is thoroughly uninteresting, nothing about him makes sense and he's just this cartoonish evil scientist experimenting for bottom text reasons, his entire empire makes no sense, he controls basically nothing on the ground except a castle which is connected to a gigantic subway tunnel or whatever, but even that doesn't justify the huge amounts of troops as his disposal. It's a serious shame to not make a feudal system where you could convince his vassals to ally against him. He's also comically cruel to his subordinates. No worldbuilding is done here sadly. You don't even hear anything of him besides audio tapes until the very end, where he has no real character, is just comically cruel then injects himself with drugs and becomes instantly this weird zombie creature (volatiles previously took a long time to mutate and had a whole cool cave process). The other characters are also weak. Bringing back Aiden could've been cool (maybe as coop) but is not utilised and he basically instantly disappears. Spike being there makes no sense and him and Crane really had no emotional bond. Crane is also constantly insufferably rude and mean to people.

I forgot about this game very quickly after playing it, which is why this review is just crude ramblings rather than a properly formatted and streamlined text. I just wanted to offer some negative thoughts on this massively well-rated game.

I don't think it's a return to form, I don't think it's very good, and playing it was often a chore. If it's like 10€ it's probably worth playing, or sail the high seas if it's legal where you live.

It's just a huge missed oppertunity. They had a decent set-up (please stop with the annoying zombie abilities, I don't want that) and blew it. Just unfortunate.

Game's great but the monetisation sucks and I feel it being live-action takes away from fun custom missions and modding support and I doubt it will be around 10 years from now. Bit of a shame
