I highly recommend this game to anyone who has any interest in mythology, the ancient world, or RTS in general. Even prior to the remaster it was one of the best RTS games ever made, but with the good changes that have been made and the sheer love that went into staying faithful to the original, I would say that this is THE best RTS game ever made. By a significant margin.

For those who haven't played, I'm going to give a relatively brief breakdown of why I think that is.

To open, because I know most of us are single player first:

The original campaign, Fall of the Trident strikes a good balance between high quality mission design, mythological references, and a decent plot. There's plenty of humor, high stakes and interesting characters to go around. Narratively, I don't think its something that would compare to the likes of SCII: Legacy of the Void, but it more than makes up for that with a much more interesting variety of mission types and themes. From making your way through the underworld where only the dead can guide you, to sailing past pirate fleets in the hopes of taking their warlord by surprise, to... turning into pigs and saving Odysseus on Circe's Island. It all comes together to make something truly special.

Later campaigns such as New Atlantis don't quite have the same level of quality to them overall, but they are still well worth playing, and much of the scenario design is equally creative from one mission to the next. Though the remastered dialogue leaves something to be desired, and I would recommend after completing Fall of the Trident to go to the mod section and get the mod that adds in the original cutscene dialogue.

Also worth noting that with mods, most of these campaign missions can be played with a friend in coop, which is some of the most fun I've had in all of my years playing an RTS.

Off to multiplayer and skirmish:

The faction rebalances and changes to the god powers and tech trees I feel have really elevated the game. Minotaurs can now throw clusters of units at a time, Centaurs lay down a hail of arrows, you can spend favor to cast your god powers again and again, and everything keeps moving. It's still the same game we all grew up with, but with so much more flavor added onto it so that it gives that same sense of wonder and awe that it did 22 years ago.

Whereas other RTS games would slow down as time goes on due to a lack of resources, sometimes even resulting in a stalemate, in AoM trade and farms give you vulnerable, but infinite ways of generating the core resources needed to keep the game going, allowing things like Titans and Mythic Age god powers to really shine. This is especially true in team games.

For those new to the game series, each faction is also quite unique, with different methods of favor generation, unit rosters, resource gathering, etc., and each god within that civilization represents a completely different way to use those tools. Gaia, for example, may be more of an eco focused god, with lush greenery and better villagers allowing you to move quickly across your territory, easily defend and out produce your opponent in the long term, whereas Kronos can use his manipulation of time to shift buildings directly into the enemy's base or wear away their defenses as though they had never been built, crushing opponents in record time.

Beyond the game itself and the balance changes therein, I think a small section should be dedicated to the general quality of life features added to the game:

Custom color presets, fully customizable grid hotkeys, a beautifully designed and intuitive UI, responsive right-click-drag scrolling in the style of C&C3: Tiberium Wars, the ability to rally units directly into control groups, optional autoqueue for villagers and (in non-competitive modes) military units, assisted farm placement when you shift click over a drop point, and for the absolute newest of players there's even an autobalance feature for your economy in single player and casual PvP that you can adjust, ignore, or enable and disable over the course of a match. This game has gone out of its way to be the most accessible and easiest RTS to get started with by far, and this also allows players to focus in a lot more on what they're actually doing during a match. When I say this is the smoothest RTS out there, I mean it.

I've already mentioned the modding scene a little bit here, but I think it bears its own paragraph:

The tools available for making maps and scenarios are quite powerful in this game, and there is an in game menu where you can browse everything from coop versions of existing campaigns, to brand new scenarios and custom campaigns, to new game modes, to skirmish maps. Beyond this there are also graphical mods for changing unit models or textures, sound mods (some of which work in online multiplayer) and even full faction overhauls. The possibilities are quite limitless.

There are some minor drawbacks with the game, such as the reprised voice acting, minimal tutorial, lack of an official coop mode or matchmaking against AI and so on, but when compared to any other RTS title out there I think those are fairly small complaints.

I cannot recommend this game enough to anyone that will listen. It is well worth the money, give it a shot, you will not regret it. Personally I intend to be playing a version of this game with my kids one day. it is that timeless of a classic.

A very fun game. I'd recommend it for anyone who's a fan of 40k. I don't think it's worth spending any money on it unless you want to, however. You don't get much for going premium other than the extra rtc from campaigns every month, and unless you simply want to look good, there's no point in buying additional rtc in the first place. The only real issue is the optomization. I use a potato to begin with, so I can't give specifics that would reflect the experiences of most players... these being people who have money to get decent equipment, but the general concensus as I've seen it is that the game runs poorly, and Fortress maps are on the extreme end when it comes to poor optomization. Aside from that and a few issues with balance (eldar OP, plz nerf), it's a good, free game with fun gameplay and set in a universe that I personally love. I cannot recommend it more.
