Your bugreport in CoE5 re: Your wife losing her last witch, I don't know for ABSOLUTELY certain, but in the previous game that's how it functioned and it was just 'a run of incredibly bad luck'. The best way to increase the odds of getting a witch / enchanter's apprentice / warlock / whatever is to get more magic schools, as otherwise the odds of getting said are rather...low rolls.
