I really, really wanted to love this game, but throughout it's development from early access to it's official release, they just kept dropping the ball.

Every update is supposed to make the game more stable, but there always seems to be an issue even after the big 1.0. Whether that be someone lagging, dropping frames, the in-game servers crashing, the game itself just crashing, it continues to happen to someone at random in my friend group. If it is something like the in-game servers crashing, then it'll hit us all and kick us out the match. Do you get partial progress or XP after the game crashes in some way after an hour long match? No. Nothing. An hour or longer wasted on some of the more intensive operations and game modes.

The first thing I'm greeted with after the big update? DLC. 10 dollars a pop for a new color variation for your weapons, armor, helmet. Oh, and the only player card cosmetics that have been released that have come out with the 1.0 update? All in the DLC packs. If you played the game before in beta, the only thing you've really gotten is a weapon skin, and whatever progress you were able to make while playing and the game didn't crash.

The worst thing this update that killed any motivation to really continue playing? The new 'Company' system. Do you want to play with your friends in your own company, along with players you like/met and enjoyed playing during matches? Well ♥♥♥♥ you. The only companies you can join are what we ~randomly~ recommend. Hope you and your friend rolled the same random search results and can join a stranger's company at least, to progress through the 'story/battle pass' stuff together. No, you can't invite someone directly to your company. No, you cannot search for a specific company. How in the hell do you release this system which is supposed to be a major game play focus/mechanic in this state? I suppose if you are a solo player, then it doesn't matter that much.

This is all without mentioning some of the gripes about game itself. The environments can be a big hit or miss, the bugs can be very.. buggy, in the menus or in matches you can still encounter consistent bugs. I still have the 'new unlock' pop up since beta in my class stuff for a class I've already maxed, that has been here for over half a year.

I want to love the game, the good parts of it are the gun play and game play loop does generally feel good. It has been fun to play with friends. Despite that, sadly no one in my friend group really wants to continue playing anymore after the bad experiences have outweighed the good thanks to the bugs, serving breaking, and instability. I fear for the game's long term health, for several reasons. I just can't recommend it.

If I could leave a neutral review I would. Where to start?

At the time of this review the game has a few bugs that can ruin your matches. Getting stuck on some stairs as either side, getting thrown through the ground when in a cocoon. You currently can only quick-play or host a private match. So similar to Friday the 13th, it is randomly chosen who is human or klown. You also cannot keep your XP if you leave the match early. Got killed early, or escaped early? Well you have to watch the entire match to get your XP.

I got this game to play with friends and it has been a hit or miss on half of our games. Sometimes it will divide our group of 3 between both sides. If you disband the party mid-game it will remove every player that was part of the party from the match. The voice chat is interesting. I can't tell if as a klown your voice chat is for the team or not. The human's voice chat is for everyone nearby, including klowns. So you know, taunting from humans insured.

The starting kit for the klowns feels a bit weak. I understand why most klowns were running shotguns or so on when playing as a human against them. If a human is experienced, they can absolutely wipe the floor with you, finish the objective, and escape all in a few minutes. A group of 2 or more victims can easily kill a klown that isn't a tank if they are all armed. Not to mention, a hit on the nose from something throw or a charged attack can leave you repeatedly stunned back to back, easy to take down. Everytime you die as a klown you respawn almost a minute later, but it is easy to die back to back, just to be forced to watch your teammates.

The human experience has certainly been something. I've had klowns spawn right next to me and kill me before I could get a object. I've had important key-items for escaping spawn right near me, and then a tiny bit further the escape that needs said item. Of the two sides, the humans feel more forgiving in several ways. At least in the handful of lobbies I've played so far.

I plan to play more of this game, try the different characters for both sides. Now is probably the best time to play before every player has maps, items, strategies and so on memorized. Despite the bugs and half of the matches being a bit of a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, I had fun overall and would recommend it.

Updated review for the anniversary: The 'Anniversary' added a blood version of the family house, a couple ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for LF's chainsaw, and several new bugs for both sides. Que times are at an all time high for Victims, and Victims now have access to a bug that lets them near instantly pick open a lock like Connie as any character, so all Family games are extremely sweaty since most veteran Victims use the bug.

I'm glad I started playing Family first over Victim. At least in Family games you can take the time to learn the controls and get used to the game. Learn each character and the maps.

Playing Victim on the other hand, was probably one of the worst multiplayer experiences I've had in a long while.

The new player experience for either side typically goes like this:

If your play Family, you can get matches relatively quickly. You might be stuck playing against experienced Victims who get out in less than 30 seconds, but at least you can try to learn. At least you can play the game, assuming the Victims don't purposely go out of their way to bully/stun lock you over and over.

Victim? You can be stuck waiting an upwards of 5 minutes to just GET INTO a lobby. As of the time of this review there is a bug where if any of the Family leaves, the lobby might be bugged until a Victim leaves. If no one leaves, your stuck waiting however long just for someone to leave or for the back-fill to find you a Family. Then, you can die 30 seconds into the match because the meta is high damage/one shots. Hope you are ready to go back to lobby hell after.

There is no skill based match making in this game, no new-player only lobbies for x amount of matches. As a new player on either side you'll be fed to the meat-grinder. If your lucky you might get some fellow inexperienced players, but as the community dwindles you'll likely end up with a veteran player who will happily curb stomp you.

Unless your playing one side with friends, I just can't recommend the game even after sinking in 200 something hours into it.
