Beyond lovin' the game from the first bits I've played in Alpha/Beta, will update this guide later

For now, know there's near-endless character customization with tons of classes, archetypes, prestige classes, and multiclassing as you level.

And that's just the beginning.

-----------------------------------------------------

Edit 1 -

A few points to make about the game, so people know what they're getting into.

* This is not a straight-line cRPG of level/difficulty scaling. There are MANY encounters you can stumble into while underleveled, unprepared, and you WILL eat dirt. Do not assume you can take every challenge presented to you the moment you face it and keep slamming your face against a wall until it works. Yes, some enemies are immune to damage types, prepare for them or walk away until you can face them. Just like in real Pathfinder, you don't expect to beat a Shadow with a level 2 group without magic.

* Quicksave often, keep at least 5 slots incase you need to backpedal is some good advice, incase you do feel yourself in a "stuck" spot.

* You may not realize it on your first playthrough, but there are MANY chances for the story to be personalized to you. Encounters based on not only your alignment/decisions, but how long you took to get to certain spots. If someone tells you they saw something nearby and you don't check it out soon, good chance it'll be gone by the time you get there, and you'll have a different story than someone who ran after it immediately.

One of my favorite roguelikes out there, and I've been a supporter since before it even was on Steam Greenlight.

Brings a breath of fresh air to the genre with a slew of new mechanics in a setting unlike your typical fantasy trope that is the head of the genre.

Play as a robot, tear apart other bots, use their parts (weapons, legs, treads, flight units, stealth units, detectors, and much much more) and become the ultimate machine.

Like Prison Architect (in art style) meets Dwarf Fortress, but without as much complexity or depth (literal and figurative).

Whereas in Dwarf Fortress the UI is a mess and you can dig through many layers and do many many things, Rimworld seemingly decided to start with the bare-bones of making a user-friendly UI and build up from there.

The game is in Alpha 14 at the time of writing this but it feels pretty complete in the early-game. There is plenty to do and build for long enough to keep you coming back for days, but as you advance your colony you may realize the game slows down a bit as it goes on. This is likely just a product of Alpha-ness that will be addressed in future updates though, I can't imagine the developer doesn't have lots of plans.

That said, when you start installing Mods and Mod-packs is when this game *really* shines. Between the "Hardcore SK" mod pack, "Mega MOD Pack", or many others, the game turns from a bare-bones almost-Dwarf Fortress into a game truly capable of standing up in its' own right.

The mod community for this game is huge and adds a lot to this type of game; From combat "realism" overhauls, to new structures/production/technology trees, to even new character traits, mods turn this game up to 11.
