It's not Runescape, and that's not bad.

There's a good foundation here, but there are some differences to know about coming in from similar games. You may have heard about resets between episodes, but a lot of the early impressions people got have lead to a lot of misinformation online about what's going on.

The game's professions (skills) are broken into episodes, for example in episode 1 there are guard (episode 1 combat), chef, fisherman, forager, and alchemist, and in episode 2 there are scout (episode 2 combat) gatherer, woodcutter, and carpenter. None of these levels is ever reset in any way, and all professions go to level 500. When people began episode two however, it was a shock that their episode 1 combat equipment didn't work and they and been set to level 0 scout instead. As noted before though, every profession goes to level 500, and returning to episode 1 restores the use of both the gear and the level. The first 20 levels of the professions are very quick, and it does not take long to get your scout level to a similar place that your guard profession was before starting episode 2. I feel like a lot of the blow back to the decision mostly stemmed from knee-jerk reactions.

I've gotten to every available episode at the time of this review, and while the initial drop to zero from episode 1 to 2 was a surprise it was something I did enjoy doing again for chapters 3 and 4 when I expected it was coming and could plan for it. There's something cool about getting to an area, and being in danger again, having to explore big maps to find the low level enemies, episode 4 was exceptionally good in this regard, because in episode 4, you become able to make your own weapons and shield, so I was not going into episode 4 unequipped. It became a mission to find the area's obelisk to attune it for the chapter so that the gear would function, before going to kill the new beasties and get my combat level back up again. I guess I've rambled enough about the "reset" controversies by now, but give it a chance. it's not so bad, and the first 20 levels come fast.

At level 20 in each profession, it becomes selectable in the knowledge system. What this does is whenever you are actively playing the game after getting any profession to level 20, a new bar begins to fill, and upon completion you can use the point to unlock a passive training method for a profession that works even when logged out, a chunk of in game currency, or a big drop of experience for any profession at level 20 or higher.

This creates a system where to level something you don't enjoy, you just need to stick it out until 20, and then do something you do enjoy to drop knowledge points directly into the skill instead of grinding it out directly. At the time of writing, a knowledge point is work 25% of the experience needed to get a skill to its next level.

All in all, the game has been a good time, the gameplay is very relaxing and while there are some stumbling blocks with the user interface, the team seems committed to releasing fixes and updates quickly,

I am looking forward to seeing what the team builds on top of this framework. Good luck to the team.

It just works. It's been a welcome distraction while dealing with this hurricane.

Am only a few hours in and I'm enjoying it. Recommend it for people who enjoy idle games in general, or games such as the Anno series or Factorio where managing the flow of resources is important.

Valheim is a solid example of the survival genre already, and I am excited to see how this develops over the course of Early Access.

It'd be incredibly hard to beat the price.

Give it a try.
