Early Access Review
If the current version would've been the full release with no further updates, I'd say it was personally still worth the money and time for me.
I can definitely see myself build some systems from time to time, even if there would be no new updates.
But as this is still early access, I'm curious and looking forward to any new content that would be added.

Personally only played the endless mode, which is very therapeutic, if you're a perfectionist.
Try to envision a real life scenario, where people from small villages work in a big city, and overseas traffic also needs to get to this big city for tourism and cargo.
But here you start from scratch and build this system yourself, building your way up with an income per train and progression tree.
The contracts you get offered will eventually give you options to build the railroads however you want, so don't be too shy to turn down the ones that don't fit your vision.

The goal for me was the endgame, where I created an automated system that makes sense and I could just let be.
If you share this goal, the path forward is optional.
You can either take on a few simple contracts and observe your progress build slowly, which is very calming, and gives you the option to do some other things on the side and pay little focus on the game.
Or you build up to this endgame as fast as possible, which brings challenge and requires you to thoughtfully plan your railroads, contracts and your train schedule to the minute.

Whatever path you choose, I do recommend working towards the endgame goal.
Very soothing to both work your way up there, and to observe the end result just automate itself with trains planned tightly to the minute.

The flow of combat feels so smooth.
Enemies give a nice challenge, hard to always just spam you're skills and get it done, which makes positioning and thinking a little more valid. Which adds to the flow of combat when it all goes well.
One run takes about one hour if completed, with the game getting more difficult next time if you do.
The skills feel like they have a lot of impact, yet the movements makes it feel like a dance. Very well done balance between those two, which is the main reason I get a lot of satisfaction out of this game and see myself returning every now and then just to "dance" once more.
Also the game updates on the regular.
Highly recommend.

You spend hours building a base barely surviving.
After all those hours, if you did survive, you reach the point where you look at your base and think "I'm ready for anything the game will throw at me."
Two minutes later your base is on fire, most of your colonist have their arms cut off or their eyes cut out, your animals are starving and bandits run off with anything worthy.

Where normally I'd uninstall a game for destroying the base I cared for so much, for some reason Rimworld makes you want to start over and do better. If not immediate, it will be after a few weeks or months.

With well balanced difficulties you can either make a beautiful base or make the game as challenging as you want.

If you'd like to go even further, you can go a little creative sometimes. Think of making an alpaca farm, or make two bases in one map where colonist have to earn their way to the main base. Or make everyone addicted to a specific drug. Or just a lonely survivor that depends on gun turrets.
With those kinds of scenarios in mind, even after you're able to create a good base from scratch, the replayability is infinite.

Highly recommend this game.

This game is a hidden gem.
This might be the only game where I'd say there is nothing else like it. If someone would walk up to me and say "Darkwood is my favorite game, can you recommend something just like it?" I'd have to answer no.

It is what an horror game should be all about in my opinion. It is insanely immersive. The music and sounds are perfect, the npc's fit the game so well, each night is insanily trippy and the dreams.. ohh the dreams..
The only thing that would bump it from 10/10 to 11/10 for me is to someday play this in 3D.

I played this in a vacation kind of style where I'd go on 4 to 8 hours sessions each day for a few days in a row. Twice.
I'm actually thinking about doing a 3rd playthrough just because I miss these woods.
Maybe.. the trees aren't trying to hurt me..
Maybe.. I belong here.. Maybe we all do..
Or is it all a dream..?

But seriously though, if you've not played this game and you're interested in playing this.. Do yourself a favour and buy it.
Make sure you do so when you have some free time. Maybe it's just me but I think this game is better when you can actually sit down for it for a while and focus on the game.
Turn your lights off, don't look at that mobile and become one with the woods.

Thank you Acid Wizard Studio for making this game. I'm looking forward to anything new you bring to the table.

Last played more than 5 years ago, July 2016, this one still holds a special place in my heart.

I remember starting for the beautiful scenery and music, eager to relax and solve some puzzles.
The added depth layered on top of that pleasantly surprised me.

Thank you for creating this game, I cherish the memories I have of it.
