WARNING! The voice recognition does not work below Windows 10(at least at the point of writing this), and there are tasks that REQUIRE you to speak to the game. So do not buy if you're not using the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ spyware that is Windows 10...

*proceeds to refund and still wishes there was an option for a neutral rating*

Note: I know the game says "Windows 10" in the requirements, but as it starts up without a problem while using Windows 7 Ulitimate, just like 100% of the other games claiming only Win10...

To all my friends: If you like turn-based strategy games, this is an absolute must-buy. Its got nice RPG-elements(levels, equipment, crafiting, upgrading, an insane amount of different equippable passive skills, 2 classes per character, multiple characters), has so many CGs that many Visual Novels could be be jealous and the combat-system is really solid.
It's also got a good amount of story-scenes, which have lots of choices that probably won't have consequences down the line, but I didn't read up if that's really the case.
To the XCOM-fans among you, it's somewhat similar, but with magic and no perma-death. With more mission-types, that boil down to be somewhat similar amongst one another tho, and more variety between characters, but no renaming and barely any visual customisation. They're their own characters after all.

This isn't an in-depth review, it's just a recommendation to friends. Any questions, feel free to ask, but I'm not through the game(far from it, lol), so I can't answer about length.

More monsters, more challenge, more stuff to farm and more combos for your weapons. And most importantly a room with lots of customization.
Full on expansion, what previously would've been an Ultimate-/G-version of the games for full price again. So better on the price-end too.

What more could you ask for? This is what expansions should be.

Fun in a group, but randoms can be very frustrating for both sides. But at least it's nowhere near as buggy as Dead by Daylight.

Would recommend getting it if you have enough friends, otherwise stay away from it.

PSA: Most negative reviews are trying to run the game at 60 FPS without outclassing the recommended specs. Their fault for not being able to read.

So, I'm running this game on literally the minimum specs listed on the store page. Except for the GPU, it's the same but with 2GB VRAM more. The settings are set to mostly the lowest, a few are set higher. Resolution at 768p.

And the game runs perfectly smooth at 30 FPS. Well, as smooth as 30 FPS can be, anyway. I might try to put a few settings a bit higher, but would have to try in rain with large monsters firing fire and stuff. Not something I can do reliably where I currently am in the game.
Only reason I'm making this review this early is to combat the negative score.

On the game itself? It's Monster Hunter, so, if you've never played a Hunting Action Game before, the genre might not be for you. If you have, however, and liked it, chances are good you will LOVE this.

For those that don't know to expect: The game is grindy, through not as much as for example Warframe or a lot of MMORPGs. That is, unless you want all weapons from a certain monster, but there's no real use to that usually. Also, the game is more skill-based than anything, with no levels. Gear progression is important however, but for armors can be mostly ignored if you're good enough to get barely hit at all. Better weapons are a must over time however.

Pros:

- All weapons now play properly differently, not like in Tri or 4G, where Switchaxe and Great Blade were way too similiar.

- weapons seem more balanced than in 4G or Tri (far from expert on all weapons, so can't judge 100%)

- good variation of monster, not best in the series, but still a very good one

- bounties are nice to have and give more sense to collecting whatever you come across

- investigations make grinding materials from monsters a bit easier and give more quests to do with little modifiers here and there (time- or faint-limit or capturing instead of hunting in whatever way)

- lots of small QoL improvements overall(faster collecting, walking while drinking healing pots, etc.)

- No more zones making everything feel way more alive and going after monsters trying to run away more fun, especially since you can stop them now.^

- slinger and using environment against monsters

- Large monsters often fight one another as well now, which makes them run away often and even gives you research points at times.

Neutral:

- nice character customization, with heterochromatic eyes being an option, could be better through

- Weapon-upgrade system is modular, meaning the optical variation for most isn't as large, but they can also be downgraded to reacquire the materials used.

- No more difference between gunner and blademaster for armours. meaning less variation, but no 2 armors needed for playing both.

- Scoutflies are a neat addition in the way they were added, imho, but they tend to hover where you have gone by already when leading you towards something, making it difficult to see traces/tracks other scoutflies point to at times.

- lots of menus with lots of submenus (standard for Monster Hunter through)

Cons:

- quests with cutscenes can't be played together

- palicos and partners can knock you off of monsters you ride

- The online system is a bit old school, but still perfectly useable.

- no more pause-option in the menu

Bugged as hell over free weeekend, answer of developers to that is just that they didn't spot bugs that were impossible not to spot if any testing would have been done and that they would check them out on monday(after the free weekend).

Also put a "free DLC"(not useable on free weekends), but in-game call it an update. Seems like down the line they want to go "yeah, look, we gave you free DLCs!", but that's just my opinion.

Also, the state of the game is clearly still Early Access...content-wise and bug-wise. Yet they claim it was a full game...

Fanboys, downvote all you want. Facts are facts. And I don't even see need to start mentioning how much the devs clearly favour the killer over the survivors...

EDIT: "Product receieved for free" is actually not the case anymore, as I've now got the game, and well...some of the bugs from the free weekend are still there over half a year later - like the extreme range of the killer; roughly twice the range of their weapon + arm...

EDIT 2: Range still not fixed, as of 29th June 2019, killer can still get stuck when trying to grab someone from one of the exit-thingies when the door opens before the killer reaches the person trying to open it.

After playing (only) over a 100 hours and having the true ending and normal ending, I thought it might be about time for me to write a review for this great game. I'll put a pro and con tl;dr below with some additional points included.

First off, I've gotta say that the story is pretty good, albeit very basic for most parts. The premise is what's special, with the world being Gamindustri and the 4 countries representing Sega(Planetune/Planeptune), Sony(Lastation), Microsoft(Leanbox) and Big N(Luwee/Lowee). Each of them has a goddess(called CPU in the often more than just purely stupid localization, more on it below), which represent the consoles of the seventh generation of their respective nation, them being: Neptune(the cancelled Sega Neptune), Noire(PS3), Vert(Xbox360) and Blanc(Wii). Then their are also some backgrounds to the world of course which'll be part of the story, but barely anything but basic stuff.
The Main-Antagonist Arfoire actually represents the R4-Module in the localised version and all kinds of similiar stuff in the original(read: Japanese version/spoken text) with her name being Majekonnu there.
The most special part of the story is the constant 4th wall-breaking, especially by our MC, Neptune.

Next up I'll talk about the gameplay. Although it's called a JRPG by almost everybody, I'd rather call the fighting system a TBS, most reminiscent of Super Robot Taisen/Wars NEO for Wii, but wether you know it or not, I'll elaborate: Just like in classic JRPG-fighting-systems you and your opponent take turns dependent on AGI, and have multiple Attack-Options. Here comes the difference through. On the characters turn you actually walk around with them depending on their corresponding stat and depending on the weapon you've got a range for attacking. When an opponent is in range and you attack, you actually start a kind of simplistic Combo with 3 types of attacks where you can set different ones in the menu and of course learn more through leveling up. You can chain up to 4, with the first 3 being of the basic-types and the 4th being a special Combo-Finisher, for which you've gotta increase the so called EXE-Gauge by attacking the opponnents. And then there's also 2 special attack-menus, one being for normal special attacks and spells, while the other is a type of finishing move and also includes Team-Moves. You can use these instead of starting a combo and the range of effect of them is undependent on your weapon, and differs per Skill.
You can take up to 3 girls into battle, and each of them can have 1 support, with whom they can tag out during battle, receive support from them and (in certain cases) do special Team-Moves.

Now I'll come down to the fanservice: Panty-Shots sometimes appear during the fights(if you change your camera-height accordingly), and that's it for them mostly, if not completely. Dialouge-wise there are some small things and then there's the rather cute flirting of IF and Vert, but since it's more cute, I won't even really call it fanservice. The biggest part of fanservice might be the jiggling breats(even almost flat Blanc-samas ^^") during the CGs. That's about it, maybe a few things here and there in the dialogue, but not neraly as much as is often exaggerated here.

And then there's the design of everything: The characters are all distinct, and albeit most of them being rather equipped with tropes, none of them are empty characters. Remember folks, tropes are NOT inherently a bad thing, it's more like the opposite unless handeled poorly. After all, a character that fits NO tropes will ALWAYS be completely without any distinct features.(in case you think otherwise, prove it to me and I'll add an "ALMOST")
The design of the dungeons is done really good, optically. NOT A SINGLE MAP IS IN EXISTENCE TWICE. However, most of the same type are very similiar to each other. Take note, that "same type" means the same textures and stuff.
Now for the worst part of the design through: The Monsters. While each of the base-types is designed really well and almost - if not absolutely - all are references to the one or other thing, the annoying part is the over-using of the same model. Now, that would be absolutely fine imho if they were always recolored. But there are only a few recolors of them all, making for way too few models. The first dragon you can encounter actually uses the same model as the one in the last dungeon, not even recolored, but the names differ, and only them sadly. But, over time you'll get used to that. Actually, it's not really annoying at all, just a minus point I had to mention.

Lastly I'll go over the localization briefly. Most of the time it's done quite well. Only a few things are omitted here and there in comparison to the spoken japanese text, and a few times completely senseless or useless stuff is added in the sentence. The worst thing is, when the added things are making a character appear ooc(out of character). This actually frequently happens with Neptune in the localization. While she's kidding around most of the time, the localization has her ooc quite often. Everytime she uses slang except at the start of the meeting Falcom in Planetune. But that's still on a bearable level in this one. A bit worse is the handling of Compa's "Monster-san". Whenever she says it, they just omit the "-san", which in itself is absolutely ok. BUT one time during a scene where she actually tries to call the seriousness back they made "Mr. Monster" out of it. Now, if she would've used it from the beginning, it wouldn't do anything to that scene, but like this, it seems as through she doesn't even try to get the seriousness back. That's only 1 example, there are more, but overally the localization is - as I said already - ok. Some references are changed out to make more sense to a western audience, absolutely ok for a localization. Although I almost forgot the worst point of the localization, which are the jokes. Often you can be sure the joke you're reading is absolutely out of place AND context, or just completely added. This mostly gets done to NORMAL sentences, and for example Neptune's "take nep"-thingy and the "Pika" were NOT existent in the original, she said normal stuff in place of these. The only other really bad thing is the changing of terminology. Here's a list of the top of my head:
"Basilicom" actually was "church", nothing else.
"CPU" was ALWAYS "goddess", NOT "CPU", NEVER and actually is quite senseless...
"HDD" is completely senseless as well, if not even more than "CPU". The original said "Megamika", which roughly would translate to "Goddessfication", or for the sake of making it flow better in english sentences, "goddess-form".
These are the most prominent things, there likely where some more senseless changes.

Pros:
  • good story, even if nothing special
  • lots of characters to use(16+3 DLC-characters, the latter being OP at first, rather normal power after 2 to 3 chapters after you acquire them)
  • awesome soundtrack
  • original(japanese) voices
  • gameplay is rather simplistic, but fast paced enough to not get stale (if you want, you can skip even the attack-animations)
  • extremely high number of things to craft, including dungeons and plans to change some things about the game itself/dungeons themself, including higher or lower difficulty, which also can be turned on and off
  • fun characters, with someone for everyone to love/like
  • quite high number of accesoires for the main characters, with lots of outfits for the goddesses and a few for the other characters...
Cons:
  • ...but no outfits for IF and Compa (accessoires are there)
  • not enough depth in the fighting system
  • changing of terminology, adding jokes out of place

I'll give it a solid 8.5/10, if not for the localization it'd be a solid 9/10. I loved this game and will call it a must-have for fans of JRPGs.
