CAPCOM releases another anti-tamper mess

    They took what they did not learn in Monster Hunter: World and Devil May Cry 5 and rigged up SteamAPI with enough exception handling shenanigans to kill a horse (killing, or at least sedating, horses is Special K's job!).

This game will hitch any time you make any progress toward unlocking an achievement and it is _emphatically_ caused by CAPCOM's unorthodox level of Denuvo protection (!!)

    You are going to hitch when an enemy hits you, you are going to hitch after killing an enemy, this is beyond absurd.

I had some success jumping over the problematic anti-tamper triggers, but only an actual cracked executable will _safely_ undo CAPCOM's SteamAPI quantum entanglement. Pirates will definitely have a better PC experience than actual Steam customers unless CAPCOM patches this @#$%.



Anti-tamper nightmare aside, there is something even stupider lurking under the hood to make the PC version run poorly. It is creating and destroying DXGI factories each and every frame to ask Windows for a list of resolutions your monitor supports and the amount of installed VRAM. Luckily this does not cause stutter, it has a constant-time performance penalty (on the order of 3 ms of CPU time).

Special K has worked around this baffling performance parachute (consult the #releases section on my Discord server).

It pains me to do this, since I have fond memories of the original NieR and enjoyed it more than Automata, but this port is horrendous.

Input code that needs to be banished back to whatever corner of hell it crawled out of, thread synchronization problems causing artificial CPU-bound performance, a mouse cursor that hides itself when playing KB&M, and shows itself when playing gamepad (WTF?!).

I have fixed all of these issues, more than doubled the framerate, and I'm fairly certain there will never be an official update to fix any of this stuff. It's a great game, and I recommend playing it, but I don't recommend giving these developers the idea that their work is good enough to sell at AAA prices :P

Game is unplayable in VR if you have Valve Index or htc VIVE controllers. Between the two different control schemes the game half works on each :) Presumably, it must work for Facebook users, otherwise this isn't an actual game.

Nonetheless, impossible VR mode aside, the flat game is still very good. I already finished it on Xbox One and don't regret buying it a second time or the non-functional VR mode.

Buckle up, this port's on shaky ground. Had to spend 30 minutes fixing bugs just so Alt+F4 doesn't deadlock the game.

Fun still, but definitely hoping for better if we get another real Persona game on PC.

As much as I wanted to commend the developers for adding a 60 FPS option and 3840x2160 support at the last minute (first demo build supported neither of these things), they lost all goodwill when I discovered that under the hood the resolution is _always_ 1920x1080 no matter what resolution setting you pick.

Special K has a patch in the test branch for this game that adds arbitrary resolution support. Stretching a 1080p framebuffer to 3840x2160 in 2021 should not be a thing, stupid ports doing things like that should have died when D3D9 did.

Desktop is set to 3840x2160, 50 Hz... I expect games to respect that preference.

TL;DR: This quality of this port is completely unacceptable.

Do NOT buy this crap, I am tired of these lousy Yakuza ports and this has to end. SEGA needs to hire a port studio that knows what they are doing.

Game has the unique distinction of enabling HDR by default. In fact, this is possibly the only game I have ever seen that uses HDR that has no calibration menu (or option to turn off).

(That, of course, means what we have here is little more than LDR -> HDR remapping to use the attached display's full luminance range with no advanced post-processing).

Nonetheless, given the fact that virtually all games in existence are capable of LDR -> HDR and none have made it a policy to do by default, this is still pretty neat. Would like to see more games take this approach even if they don't make an attempt to do more advanced HDR-related work.
