My opinion may be a little bias, being a long-time fan of the Total War franchise; but all things considered Total War Attila is a great game. It isn’t revolutionary; it doesn’t change the real-time or grand strategy genre as we know it. What it DOES do is provide a fun and engrossing continuation of the Total War series in an extremely interesting time period of mankind’s history. The core of the gameplay is still great fun, albeit a little repetitive at the later stages of campaign play. There are some nice, if small improvements to the latest instalment of the Total War series. Long-time Total War fans will enjoy the new factions, new horde and diplomacy mechanics and the new units of this fascinating historical period.

Some people criticise Creative Assembly for releasing Attila with day 1 faction DLC, and the limited number of factions playable for the base game. These critiques may have merit, but unfortunately the DLC model is well established and here to stay. Let us be thankful that Creative Assembly is releasing more mini-campaign DLC alongside the faction DLCs. Again, your experience might be different, but I have been pleasantly surprised at the lack of major bugs in the Attila release. It was very refreshing after the troublesome release of Rome 2. I almost didn’t pre-order Attila, but I am VERY glad I did. It has proven to be an amazing game. The one-more-turn-itis of Attila is strong, and has led to me racking up a cool 110 hours of the game since it was released only 3 weeks ago. Yes, the developers do need to tweak some aspects of the game but the core is solid and most important of all – FUN!!

I highly recommend this title to both Total War veteran and new-comers alike. Attila Total War fills a niche in the strategy market – it has elements of grand strategy - without the super detailed management of games like Civilization, Europa Universalis and the like; as well as the real-time strategy element sure to appease history buffs, aspiring tacticians and people who just want to see big groups of men charge into other big groups of men and hack them to pieces!
