I use a lot of different usernames for various different places online, most of which are largely independent of each other (and some of which are isolated completely). Here on Steam, I'm Jaing Skirata.

Wondering who the heck Jaing Skirata is? If you're not a huge fan of the original Star Wars Expanded Universe like I am, and in particular if you have not read Karen Traviss's excellent Republic Commando novels, you may make the obvious yet completely incorrect assumption that this is my real name. This has led to some very amusing situations, including a particularly hilarious L4D2 match where a teammate asked something alone the lines of "Jaing Skirata? What is that, some kind of Indian name?".

In reality (or more correctly in fiction) Jaing Skirata is the Null-class Advanced Recon Commando (Null ARC) who had been assigned the designation Null-10, one of the first test batch of 12 prototype Jango Fett clones where Jango's genome had been a bit too extensively tinkered with by the Kaminoans as part of their initial attempt to improve upon Jango Fett's genome. Of the 12, only 6 survived incubation, then after two standard years of development and some training the remaining six clones were assessed as "defective" by the Kaminoans solely because they would not follow orders reliably enough to satisfy the Kaminoans' rigid standards.

When Jango Fett was notified that there were issues with the first test batch of clones, he decided to personally inspect the batch and took Cuy'val Dar member Kal Skirata with him. By the end of the inspection both men were profoundly disturbed by the Kaminoans, Null-11 had swiped Skirata's hold-out blaster to briefly held Orun Wa at blasterpoint until Skirata talked him down, and Skirata ultimately took the six clones to personally train rather than leave them to be executed for their "defectiveness". Orun Wa's protests at this were overruled by Jango's authority and Skirata left with the clones. Skirata gave them Mandalorian names, then taught them Mandalorian culture and trained them until the Clone Wars began.

However when the Nulls were ordered to enter suspended animation on Coruscant five days after the battle of Geonosis they very forcibly refused, shutting down an entire barracks block and barricading themselves inside. Skirata was then swiftly located, arrested, and ferried to the barracks, and asked to help, which he only agreed to after securing his conditions of being enlisted into the Grand Army of the Republic and given back direct command over the Nulls, which were often informally referred to as Skirata's private army and would now remain that way.

And that's the story of how I got this username.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.
