NOTE FOR ANYONE USING WINDOWS 7 OR LATER
The game can be run properly on Windows 7/8/8.1/10 without heavy modding. Here's a basic outline on what to do

1. Install Games For Windows Live. Microsoft still has a download here[support.xbox.com] And click the link attached to the second paragraph
   
2. Open up C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 3
   
3. Right-click FalloutLauncher.exe and click "Properties"
   
4. Check "Run this program in compatability mode" and select "Windows XP (Service Package 3)"

If your computer has more than two cores, you'll also need to do the following:

1. Open up C:\Users\<whatever your username is>\Documents\My Games\Fallout3
   
2. Open up FALLOUT.ini
   
3. Find the line "bUseThreadedAI=0" and change the 0 to a 1
   
4. Add a line of code under it that reads "iNumHWThreads=2"
