I have played this very addicting Java based medieval fantasy, point-'n'-click RNG-simulator (Old School RuneScape) since its launch in 2013 - to this date, I have clocked in 5,000+ hours of total time played across my accounts.

"OSRS" is a copy of RuneScape from August 2007 (in other words; legacy version of RuneScape) [oldschool.runescape.wiki] with game updates until that date; meaning no Evolution of Combat, no trade limit (free trade) or the removal of the wilderness - but the game hasn't stayed all the same in the past eight years.

If you used to play RuneScape back in the 2000s and wonder if you can continue playing with your old account (assuming you can access/recover it), the answer is no - it's a fresh start over on OSRS, but you can check on your account back in RuneScape 3.

Although "old school", the game has received many major and minor content updates varying from QoL, new land and quests to bosses and minigames (while mostly respecting the old school vibe and integrity). The game has been consistently receiving weekly or at least bi-weekly game updates. The Old School team started as only a few JMods (Jagex Moderators) and now consists 66 of them (RuneScape 3 has their own seperate team).

Most notable content updates:

Continents/cities/land: Zeah, Prifddinas in Tirannwn (the Elven City), the Fossil Island | (The map of OSRS, today) [www.runescape.com]
Minigames: Raids 1 (Chambers of Xeric) & Raids 2 (Theatre of Blood), which both unlock some BiS gear, Last Man Standing, Soul Wars, the Inferno A.K.A. Fight Caves v2 (where you get the Infernal Cape (Fire Cape v2))
Quests: Monkey Madness 2, Dragon Slayer 2, Song of the Elves
Gear: Avernic defender, Toxic blowpipe, Dragon warhammer, Dragon claws, Dragon hunter crossbow & Dragon hunter lance, Elysian spirit shield, (Toxic) Tridents of the seas/swamps (enchanted), Ghrazi rapier, Blade of Saeldor, Inquisitor's mace & armour, Kodai wand, Justiciar armour, Twisted buckler, Dragonfire ward, Eternal/Pegasian/Primordial boots, imbuable Dagannoth king rings, Zenyte jewellery (just to name a mere few)
Other: OSRS Mobile (Android & iOS), the Grand Exchange, Ironman gamemodes/account restrictions, God wars dungeon, Corporeal beast, very rare pet drops from various activities (get yourself a purely cosmetic pet follower), added F2P, PoH (Player owned House) updates e.g. the Portal Nexus

This game is not for ones that dislike grinding a lot (in fact, you better love it), since e.g. major gear upgrades require several master quests with high level requirements accomplished.

For new first-time players regarding questing:

The veteran experience differs a lot from a new player's experience - so I can confidently say that the quests aren't a grind for someone doing them the first time - they aren't just some dumb fetch this and that or escort NPCs here and there, unlike most MMOs out there.

Quests are stories that happen within the universe of RuneScape; with dialogue, puzzles, lore details and boss fights. Highly enjoyable.

Some could say that this is the Ultimate Cookie Clicker Game, since you can AFK a lot of skills and activities. I myself AFK-'Scaped (while simultaneously playing e.g. CS:GO or watching movies/series/YouTube and whatsoever) 72-99 slayer, 77-99 runecrafting & ~60-99 mining (for example).

If you plan on trying Old School RuneScape, my first recommendation is to:

Download a 3rd-party client called RuneLite (make sure to download it directly from RuneLite.NET - as there are many fake sites disguised as RuneLite in order to hijack accounts or even IRL bank accounts and to possibly infect your PC with viruses/malware) and to watch this video ("The Reason Why You Should Be Playing Old School RuneScape")

Pros-'n'-Cons:
+ Great quests and lore
+ Runs on absolutely every potato-PC
+ Nostalgia rushes (given you played this as younger of course)
+ The 75+% polling system (every non-integrity update has to receive at least 75% of yes votes from the players (w/ membership) that participated in voting in order for an update to make it live in-game)
+ r/2007scape - The community-driven sub-Reddit - it literally has the best drama and spiciest memes of all sub-Reddits. Have you ever seen the 🦀🦀🦀 crabs 🦀🦀🦀 used this way around in the interwebz? Leaked from r/2007scape.
+ OSRS Wiki. Hands down the best Wiki site in the whole internet. Every topic is highly detailed with no mistakes or whatsoever. Jagex even pays for their servers. Just see it for yourself and compare it to any other Wiki(a)s.
- Consumes a large amount of dedication and time
- Almost non-existent customer support, it's an absolute joke - really
- Bots, massive bot farms & gold farmers and the black market/RWT (Real World Trading) issues
- The Sand Casino (Duel Arena) The Duel Arena is being removed entirely, relatively soon (and they've added a 10M gp staking cap already)!
- The default/vanilla client (and this Steam version too) lack modern features like extended draw/view-distance, scalable UI (the game was originally made for monitors with something like 800x600 pixel resolution, and on e.g. a 4k monitor the UI is soo... ant-sized) & graphic enchantments like anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering etc. (which are luckily offered by the RuneLite client)
- Jagex revenue 2020: £110,9 MILLION [www.jagex.com]; doesn't invest in customer support, stopping bot farms and gold farmers (enough) or enchancing the vanilla client or just straight up "buying" RuneLite.

I'm very unlikely to pick up Runescape again, but I heard it was being added to Steam today and I thought your review was spot-on from my memory. More people should see this.
