TL;DR: Hold off. Don't jump in now, don't buy DLC, wait and see what these devs do because the first impression of their re launch is a poor showing.

It's very difficult to point at a game I've sunk over a thousand hours into and tell other people "Don't buy it, not right now". This occasion compelled me to break a long running bit where I only post joke reviews on steam. This is an awful first impression for new players that will rightfully harm this game's reputation.

Hunt: Showdown, or recently re badged for some reason to Hunt: Showdown 1896, is not being handled well. The new update's main menu is so atrocious that it manages to sour the steak that is the gun play. Time between matches has ramped up due to an unacceptable number of sub menus and functionality that has been removed or made worse all in service of this "new era" that is launched with a trailer that features hunters speaking in cartoonish on the nose dialogue that feels in line with something out of the ratchet and clank movie.

The new map is gorgeous but either the new engine has caused performance hits for many players or the new map is not well optimised, I think I got lucky as I've been very stable when playing. I can't go as in depth in discussing the nuances of the flow and map design as as every time I want to re-gear and go back into a match I'm met with this horrendous out of game UI. No, Crytek, I will not write in my steam review at length why it is bad. The data specialists dedicated to driving player engagement who've never played a game before in their lives are paid professionals who can be placed on a PiP that requires them look at an old build of the game, they have a salary for that.

The gunplay is still Hunt, it's still tense, it's still satisfying, but this is a horrible first showing of their "new era" that seems like it wants to chase an audience very far removed from the core this game originally appealed to or a new wave of console users without any real care or consideration. The best visual comparison I can give a prospective buyer or long time player is to compare the Dark Sight trailer to their new funny marvel quippy trailer.

Am I recommending you do not purchase a game based on a bad main menu and a bad trailer? No. I'm using these as examples of how the current hands at the wheel don't quite understand their own ship. This review is a cautionary time stamp advising anyone new thinking about buying in or anyone considering DLC purchases to wait and see what said hands do next. Could they fix the UI, polish up the servers, fix the performance issues? Yes. Does it mean they'll stop trend chasing? No idea.

Your move Crytek, I'll keep using up your bandwidth and see where you go with it. I'd like to update this review in a few months time and break down at length everything you do right, give a recommendation, and bring my friends along for the ride.

Update: 11/01/2024:
One event come and gone, ups and downs, and problems that were never fixed. Instead of wasting your time I'll just direct you to purchase the new Ghost Face Rampage (tm) DLC for $13.99 CAD and get hyped for the upcoming Mariah Carey Mayhem christmas expansion where we'll see an in universe multi media collab between Sony Music Entertainment(tm) and The Port Sulphur Band!

MANKINDS FIRST STEP INTO SPACE COLONIZATION. Skyrim combines elements from many other successful titles into a bland pure joy.

The game boldly takes inspiration from call of duty, mimicking its graphical fidelity perfectly. The environments one visits are truely breathtaking, my favorite was Cave#107(♥♥♥♥ you Cave#106 lovers, #107 was superior in every way). The combat was nailbiting at every turn, I wasn't sure if i'd have to alter my tactics from an encounter to encounter basis. However I was able to prevail with my old faithful strategies, it reminded much of the feeling of being a warrior constantly improving his unique tecnique as his life progresses. The music was truly astounding, I liked the part where the choir yelled.

The combat mechanics were unlike any other, who knew that streamlining the looking for raid mode in world of warcraft would've benfited a single player RPG? The indepth lore behind the dragons was

On the topic of bread, the cooking in the game was unlike any other I've seen, chef gordon ramsey would draw inspiration from these mechanics. Inspiring.

The battles were tests of everything I've learned my twelve years of life, everything i've ever known culminated into these battles. If you are faint of heart, DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME.
Each type of dragon stronger than the last, bringing its own unique menchanics to the mix forcing you to adapt your life to battle them. The fact that i can just be attempting to meet my wife in my home city just to be attacked by a dragon helps to build up the feeling of hopelessness this world has and in no way breaks the flow of the game.

In conclusion, this game is my game of a lifetime. This game will define me as my life continues and I master the art of making nude mods, perfect for the kids bring family. 12/9
