Fez is a must have indie game for your steam library.
Charming, puzzling & downright beautiful, this game will have you scratching your head.

I'm not usually the kind of person who writes reviews, but for the sake of this game I'd have to say that it's a 10/10
Go ahead and try it for yourself if you don't believe me, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

(NOTE: This review is aimed at new players)

So I thought I'd elaborate a little on the context of this game to make this a more useful review like others have made.

First of all, this game is HARD.
Like. REALLY ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ HARD.
If you're a newbie at this game, you are going to die ALOT.
But that's not a bad thing.

If there is one thing this game does right its create an atmosphere thats both immersive & chilling.
It is not only a wonderful survival game but an absolutely brilliant adventure game aswell (Once you manage to get to grips with how hard the game can be that is. And you stop dieing as much)
By the way, do you think i'm exaggerating with that "You're going to die ALOT" remark?
Trust me, I'm not. Though I really wish I was.

I'll start you off properly by describing the basic mechanics of the game at the start.
First of all, this game is survival based-so you are gonna have a few things to watch out for when you start up a new game. Health, Hunger & Sanity.
These are you three basic survival bars which you have to maintain.
Hunger being quenched with food items (raw or cooked), and health being quenched also by food, but only certain foods. This means that some foods will give you much less health than others (That is that a majority of the food you come across like carrots, berries and meat will not heal much)
Health will regen slowly over time if you cannot afford to waste limited food resources on it though.
And then there's sanity...oh boy.
Sanity is the bar that will quite literally wreck your own sanity in real life if you fail to maintain it.
It can be regained when lost by picking flowers and you can make a hat from the petals you recieve from those flowers which will majorly slow down the rate at which you loose sanity for a few in-game days. If your sanity get's too low though, shadow mosters will start to physically hurt you.
I will describe enemies a little later in this review. But first, crafting!

(NOTE: I may re-edit this review another day to describe the crafting in full detail)
Crafting is the most important mechanic in this game and can be a littl complicated for begginers to understand in the beggining.
For most newbies I would suggest the dont starve wiki to get to grips with the different section of the crafting menu, as describing it here would take me all day.
So onto that description of the enemies!

Enemies come in all shapes and sizes in Don't starve, and they all spawn in the moment you start.
It is your job to avoid them until you are ready to take them down...which takes a while.
My suggestion is the same as most would suggest, if you're going to attack anything in the first 10 or so days...make it spiders or singled out pigmen.
If your sanity gets to low you will not an immense increase in the amount of shadowy creatures lurking about. These creatures will actually be able to hurt you if your sanity gets low enough.
I won't go into too much more detail about the enemies as you probably get the point, most are harder to defeat than some.

Now we get to seasons...
When you start a new world you can pick to either start in winter or summer. (FYI. Winter sucks)
After you get through summer you get to autumn, then winter & then it goes back around to spring and then the cycle repears itself, like real life (not that this game mimics real life cause jesus that would be terrifying)

All in all this game is a terrifying but interesting dark survival experience that never fails to get my blood pumping and my brain on overdrive.

If you are looking for a survival game that isnt a zombie filled gorefest and actually has some genuinly spooky chill-inducing atmosphere and tight survival gameplay, then this may just be the game for you.

An absolute 10/10

..............................................................................................................................................

First Edit: 29 June 2014

I absolutely love this game.
Survival mixed with dark/horror themes, your sanity will drain slowly overtime as you encounter strange beasts and dark pits.
Not to mention the countless amount of nights spent in fear of literally EVERYTHING.

10/10

I have had the pleasure of recently playing the xbox arcade version of this game (which is much easier for me personally). Niether version is different from the other.

I would like to start by saying I have beat the xbox arcade version and that's where my stance on the game comes from. So with that said, if you have this game...PLAY WITH A CONTROLLER!
This game demands that you play it with a controller and if you don't you are only dumbing down the experience for yourself.

Now to explain the game to you.

First, the story.
In this game you find yourself awaking in the middle of a forest, awoken by what appears to be a magical talking sword and its apparent "guardian", a nimbat named Fidget (who is adorable by the way). You have no idea who you are or how you get where you are, but the sword assures you that you will find out if you head towards a nearby village.
Fidget is obviously not happy with letting go of the sword she is supposed to be the guardian of, so she reluctantly agrees to follow along with you.
You travel through the forest towars the village, fighting waves of monsters until you come across a couple in trouble. You fight the monsters that are threatning them, and they ofcourse thank you, then you make your way into the village.

This game takes you to many different environments throughout the course of the game, and little by little you learn about the world you're in and why there are monsters everywhere.
One of the funnest things about playing this game for the first time is learning what going on as you play. There are sad moments, intense moments, funny moments and creepy moments.
Its definately a story worthy of its title "An Elysian Tail".

Secondly, the visuals in this game are GORGEOUS.
I have seen few games that have anything similar to this style, its the most creative and stunning thing I have seen since okami. The environments in this game are designed to be immersive and beautiul. From calm serene forests to wet underground caves to fiery volcanoes, this game does not fail to keep you just as interested on whats in the background as whats in the foreground. The art style in this game is undescribable...just see for yourself!

Third, the soundtrack.
I find the music in this game to be one of the most immersive things about it.
No matter where you are in the game world, be it a village, a cave or the mountains, the music is right there to, well...immerse you! I can't tell you how much time I spent just stopping in a safe place wherever i was in-game to just listen to the music that was playing. Its simply magical.

Fourth, Gameplay (Specifically, combat mechanics)
The combat mechanics in this game are finely tuned to make sure you never feel like its the games fault when you take a hit. If a monster attacks, you have an oppertunity to parry and stun them, giving you a chance to take them out. In extreme combat situations when you are surrounded by what seems like hordes of enemies, you can combine abilities into devastating attacks that hit multiple enemies at once.

Fifth, More Gameplay? (This time the more finicky bits)
So combat is a bit more than just "swing your sword and go" in this game, theres an entire leveling system! But what do you focus on first? Health? Attack? Defense? Fidget?
This may seem intimidating to some, but it's quite simple to use this menu.
You see, as you kill monsters you gain XP, which will eventually gain you a level up (you need more XP each level) Once you get a level up, you will gain a "Skill Gem" which you can use in one skill slot. (the max level you can reach is 60 in this game) Thats 60 skill slots shared out between the 4 different areas, 15 skill slots in each. You'll find that as you play you'll know what you want as you level up, its only 4 options to choose from after all.

Oh, and don't forget the item drops...and character items.
Item drops are something you will get very used to seeing in this game, as there is something called a "material" section in your inventory. This is where items that can be crafted are kept.
All the monsters you encounter throughought the game have a chance of dropping particular items that relate to specifically them, but they can allso drop random materials, which can be crafted into the various character items.

Character items are used in the character menu, which consists of 7 key areas; Food, Armor, Sword enhancements (essentialy), a special bag for special items, a necklace slot and two ring slots. As you progress through the game you will come across increasinlgy better armor, rings, necklaces and sword enhancements through various means, its up to you which ones you want to make/buy/use to help you along your quest. As for the food and special items, the food you get as you progress through the game will get increasingly better and heal more health (because thats what food does, duh). The special items that you find will be mostly quest related and unusable in any way, except for revival and teleport stones. Teleport stones are fairly cheap and let you travel to certain parts of areas you've visited in the game whereas Revival stones are extremely hard to come by for free and buying one costs 8000 coins (which is alot).

Speaking of which, there's the shop I forgot to mention.
The shop is a unique part of this game as the character you speak at whatever shop you're at in the world is the exact same character, he is a mysterious fellow who sort of reminds me of the merchant in resident evil 4. He's creepy, but in a very comforting way. He will share some insight with you as you progress through the game and eventually well...you'll find out.
But yes, he is a shopkeeper and thus you will have to interact with him, but not as often as you think. The materials you gather throughout the game can be "catalogued" by selling one of a material to him, which he will then slowly stock more of so you do not have to go hunting for the item again. There are 42 items to be catalogued total, so you'd better kill some enamies, eh?

All in all, this game is simply stunning; visually, auditorially, gameplay and story-wise.
I have rakced up major respect for this game because not only is it all that is listed above, but it was practically made by one person. Many were credited in this game for their roles in bringing the characters to life with voices, but only one person actually coded and designed this game.
That in and of itself should be a reason to respect this game for what it is---an indie game.
Independently developed using limited funding by a single person.
If you haven't played this game yet, please don't hesitate to put it on your "I'll give it a go" list.
If you decide to pay full price for it, I can promise you it'll be worth every penny/cent etc that you spend.

This game gets a massive 10/10 from me.
Simply phenomenal.
