A very approachable, deep 4x game with a high replay value.

I really want to like this game, but the random element can be a bit heavy a times, leading to some snowbally negative situations. (Repeated early leader death means loss of legitimacy, which means loss of orders, which can impact you in a variety of ways.)

Additionally, while the AI is good for a 4X game, it tends to have a specific idea of a military, namely ranged units, which kinda leads to repetitive games as you generally have to build your military with that in mind.

All in all, I find myself ending most of my play sessions frustrated, and I'm personally moving on from this game. If the previously mentioned stuff doesn't seem that bad, definitely give this game a shot, it's got some really great stuff to it, but you need to have a stomach for a little CBT.

There are some obvious comparisons to be made with Super Meat Boy, but The End is Nigh is surprisingly different. The game features the same ultra-tight controls and platforming, but there are some major rule changes. I feel like the game is a little bit more death-happy than Edumund's previous works, but honestly it isn't even a remote problem. Each level is contained to a single screen, and flows continously with secrets and other goodies branching off to the side.

There might be some frustration later on when you have to backtrack through the levels (I haven't encountered a way to directly teleport to a specific level, but rather to the chapter start), but I highly doubt it will have much of an effect on this otherwise extremely promising game.

Booted up L4D2 for a fresh comparison; wanted to quit out of boredom. Vermintide owns.
