Now, I will admit that this game doesn't make a particularly strong first impression by any means—so poorly, in fact, that I wasn’t even sure if I was going to continue playing after the first 30 or so minutes. The jank is undeniable and piled on in spades. The game even froze entirely on several occasions during the initial “session zeros” at the beginning.
However, if you experience the same initial disappointments and setbacks that I did, I would still strongly suggest pushing through these early reservations.
Do not approach Solasta expecting the experience of a D&D video game. In stark contrast, you’ll find yourself comparing it to Baldur’s Gate 3—one of the greatest games ever made—and Solasta is absolutely not of that quality.
Instead, expect Solasta to feel much more like a traditional game of tabletop D&D in a rudimentary 3D environment. Imagine you’re playing with a group of friends—none of whom are particularly good at role-playing, nor can they do any convincing accents. Imagine that this is just your DM’s homebrewed campaign, which is fairly solid in terms of world-building, but is quite obviously let down by both their narrative and dialogue writing.
Now, the elephant in the room is quite obviously the cast of potato-like characters you’ll be controlling, engaging with, and fighting—as yes, they do all look pretty horrible. I did check out the Nexus to see if there were any mods to bring the characters to life and ditch their Play-Dohy aesthetic altogether, but sadly I couldn’t find any. I will say, though, that after playing for a couple more hours, I didn’t really care too much about my ugly party as I was enjoying the game enough to see right past it.
Now, on to the positives.
The environmental design is really quite nice, with a special shout-out given to the dungeons. The combat is also very satisfying and very faithfully emulated from the tabletop edition of 5E. However, while Baldur’s Gate 3 makes some undeniable changes to the game’s systems in order to make them a little more video game–friendly, Solasta sticks zealously to the source.
Of course, this will not be for everyone. For quite a few players—especially those who were introduced to D&D through Baldur’s Gate 3—Solasta’s unwavering adherence to 5E may well prove a little off-putting, if not outright clunky and overwhelming. But, if you’re a tabletop D&D player, whether physically or virtually, I am pretty certain you’ll warm up to its more traditional take on the game quite easily.

This is my go-to game for playing on the Steam Deck whilst I don't have an internet connection. I've played this game a great deal during my travels, including long, international flights. HoT, or perhaps Steam itself, doesn't seem to accumulate playtime during offline sessions, however. And so, as a result, my time in HoT is significantly underrepresented here.
But I love this game! It's so easy to just pick up and play for a few hours to help kill some time. Its been a life-saver whilst travelling back and forth between Europe, Asia & Australia.

It's like someone dug up the corpse of Overwatch 1 from Blizzard's basement and painted over the decayed flesh with Marvel designs. I like it.

I had been playing for about 2 weeks on Game Pass before I caught it on the Steam sale, so my play time doesn't fully reflect my time in-game. And I do bloody wish Blizzard would stop making games that I enjoy. The Diablo series has always been a lot of fun. 3 was a bit of a dip but it had its perks too. And so far I'm really enjoying D4 which p*sses me right off, because I f*cking detest Blizzard and can't stand giving them my money.

Overwatch 1 died for this. Although, let's be honest, it was outright murdered.
