A dream about dreaming. Is anything real? Does it matter either way? Who knows. A fantastic game that can hardly be explained, only experienced.

As a person with a fear of the ocean, I can say that this game is great. With mods. The base game is balanced rather poorly, and is somewhat boring, but I've only ever played the campaign mode with my friends with no traitors.

For starters, enemy spawns are way too rare, even in the later biomes like the great sea and hydrothermal wastes. Even then, the enemy variety is so little that you'll just come upon the same group of 4-5 crawlers, mudraptors, and threshers over and over. An occasional moloch, maybe, if you get lucky. You'll only ever find actual threats to your ship if you go out of your way to go to the abyssal enemy hunting grounds. However, we've found that mods greatly increase tension and fear, and make it feel like we're on a planet we aren't welcome on, rather than just a walk through the park with the occasional hiccup.

The netcoding for the game is rather..poor. Lots of shots don't even register on the server as a hit, even if you're sure you hit them, and you're the host. You can tell exactly when enemies spawn if you use mods (more specifically, we use mods like barotraumatic, into the abyss, and thalassophobia), because your frames will dip down immediately, and it isn't just a me problem, my friends with better computers than me get it as well.

Inventory management is also hell. They really don't want you to stock up on supplies because the base ships give you very little storage space, and mods that add things like backpacks and larger storage spaces are absolutely necessary.

Maybe in later updates they will fix the balance issues. At the time of writing, the update that's about to come out, the skill tree one, looks pretty promising. 30 dollars is probably a bit too much for some people to cough up if they don't plan on modding the game.

Overall, this game is pretty fun if you try to make it fun, because the game in its current state feels more like a template you're supposed to mess around with and add whatever you want. Only play if you have some friends who'll play it with you. Public servers make me want to throw myself off of Taipei 101. I recommend it only with mods.

Edit: After completely finishing the campaign, I can say that all the points I made still stand. The game crashed at least twice every single stage once we entered the hydrothermal wastes, but I'm more than sure that's just from all the mods I stuffed into this game's corpse. Even as much as I wanted to die from all the crashes, especially as we were just mere meters from the ending of the game and we had just killed multiple endworms, I still found myself wanting to complete it, and still wanting to play the game with more mods after the end.

tl;dr, The game is boring on its own, but is very fun with mods. Has lots of netcode and crashing issues.

Local submarine crew of 4 people kills six endworms and a charybdis. Game crashes, goes through final level again. Wants to do it again.

I've only played a little bit, but I think it might be fun.
