Take Grand Theft Auto, make the city the size of a small island nation, and equip the main character with a grappling hook that allows him to surf on jets or scale skyscrapers, and you have the rough outline of Just Cause 2.

Although I haven't played this in ages, I can recommend it for two reasons:
1. The design aesthetic is an intentional homage to the movie "War Games", which I love.
2. The game is quite fun, but it's also the best educational tool I've seen to explain why nuclear war is an incredibly bad idea. The game's motto is "Everybody Dies", and as the body count starts piling up, even the "winner" will feel a little shell shocked.

What more can be said about this deconstruction of Ayn Rand's Objectivism disguised as a videogame set in an underwater city built in the 1940s? The game play is good, the setting is gorgeous, and the dramatic twist 2/3 of the way through the game blew me away. Only a weak third act that strips you of hard-won abilities, plus a lame and unenaging boss fight at the end keep this from being perfect. That doesn't mean that playing through this once isn't a must for any serious gamer.

When you get tired of your MP3 collection, try taking some of the tracks for a spin through Auidosurf. Much like Guitar Hero or Rock Band, I found that "surfing" through a music track gave me a different perspective and deeper appreciation of the song's pacing, tempo, and overall structure. Plus the game itself is a lot of fun.

More fun than it should be, Saint Row 3 is "sorta like GTA" for the first few minutes, but when the second mission gives you a remote-control missile-carrying drone, and you're soon flying a jetbike, or competing in a Japanese gameshow/deathmatch, you realzie that the developer decided to ignore "realism" entirely, and that the game is better for it. The humor is juvenile and the plot is a bit by-the-numbers, but some of the missions are very clever and there's a LOT to do around the city. In the end, the overall package is so silly and committed to just being FUN that it's hard to hate, and when I found myself skydiving onto a high-rise penthouse while Kanye West's "Power" played in the background, I knew Saints Row 3 was worth the purchase price.

Pretty much the opposite of "pay-to-win", this free-to-play FPS can be enjoyed for quite a long time with only the default weapons, and if you do decided to expand your aresenal, you'll find that the options give you flexibility, not just BETTER weapons.
