You know a game is good when the community bands together to fight all enemies. Automatons, Terminids, even Sony itself.

Solid gameplay foundations with valid disappointment in terms of lack of features and performance issues. There is room for improvement but there is definitely huge potential. Really looking forward to fixes, added features, and Warzone 2. ~

Would I recommend it currently? Probably only if you're okay with performance issues and lack of features such as hardcore and player progression.

I can legit spend 3 hours in one level either lost or looking for more ammunition for my hunger assault rifle. I know other weapons might work better - but it's not an assault rifle.

I originally looked forward to the game, I thought it would be a real upgrade over the original insurgency - and when it came out, I was impressed by the gunplay and the more challenging co-op. But a year or so on I have to be brutally honest, the game just does not do it for me anymore.

The very sparse updates, and the team's focus on competative play has made the faults the game has very clear. I have a GTX 970, I'm able to run games like the Witcher 3 on nearly ultra settings with barely any problems. But in Sandstorm my FPS drops to <30 just scoping into the -FIRING RANGE-. The game is poorly optimised, and even if mods do come the possible FPS loss due to having to load extra assest just does not fill me with confidence.

I will continue to look at updates and see what happens - but for now I just cannot recommend the game in its current state.

Early Access Review
One of the most vivid memories I have playing this game came from probably one of the most intense situations i've ever encountered:

We were fighting on Kohat Toi as the americans, our squad was pinned down by Russian fighters and we were running low on ammunition. We had been holding this position for about 20 minutes - unable to penentrate their defenses. Our squad leader told us reinforcements and mortars would be coming in soon. We waited for about another ten minutes before another two squads came to our aid. By this point I was out of magazines in my marksmans rifle so I only had my pistol left.

We began to hear the mortars overhead - and we were hoping that finally we would break the stalemate. But all I remember is one of our squad members simply going: "Don't they sound a little TOO close?"

Before we knew it, the mortars landed on our position - it turned out someone had messed up the range and now we were being shelled by our own team. Our squad leader screamed for us to get to cover, only to be killed by a direct hit - for over three minutes these mortars hit us, and all we could do was hide under the very little cover we had - in some cases people were just lying prone in the ground hoping they were not hit.

The russians, having seen the colossal screwup had started storming our position and we were left to retreat back, fighting with only pistols and grenades in an attempt to regroup and try again. Of about thirty people that had been fighting on that hill, only about four of us managed to escape.

This game has everything. Great controls, great community, great developers. What sets this game apart is the true feeling of adrenaline, running through trees with rounds cracking over your head, hearing an RPG hitting your AFV and your squad leader screaming for you to get out.

If you're someone who loves flashy graphics and over the top combat, this game isn't for you. If you love realism and team work, I cannot recommend this game enough. This game gives you so much content for how much it costs - and the only DLC you need to buy is bumper packs of underwear.

10/10
