You've likely heard the idiom, "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely" (Lord Acton). I believe it is far more accurate to say "Power attracts the corruptible. Suspect any who seek it." See those who seek power as what they are - narcissistic despots in-waiting.

In practice, every government suffers an inexorable problem: Power attracts pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible. The most common idiom about power and corruption implies that any person, given the right dose of power, will be corrupted by that power. Yet it is the individual who seeks power that creates this pattern. The highest offices will always end up in the hands of sociopaths, as the beneficent see power as the burden of responsibility, and accept it solemnly.
