A fantastic remake to one of the greatest games of all time. I have finished the original probably 5 times over the course of my life. Still remember buying it in a slim box from the bargain bin at Babbage's games nearly 25 years ago. The game blew me away then and the remake still retains all those things that made the original so good. This game is a reminder that so much of gaming has become so casual and holds your hand too much. System Shock, both the original and the remake have problems. Back tracking is a problem in this genre of games and System shock suffers from it big time. If its your first play through you probably will find your self back tracking 2 maybe 3 or 4 times to find items and codes you never realized you needed until later in the game. That aside, this game is simply amazing at its complex design that is very not linear except that you need to progress level by level. The levels themselves offer no clue where to go, simply explore every inch and corner.

So many games have terrible boring stories and pointless colletables. This game has 151 emails, data sticks, and audio logs, and every one tells a bit of the story and lives aboard the station. You WANT to find these. Its easy to see where Prey gets its inspiration from (sadly it also suffers from back tracking issues almost in the entire 3rd act as well)

How does the remake stack up against the original? Amazing. The graphical style is fantastic and this game looks gorgoures. But still feels retro at the same time. The layout of the levels and secrets are almost 95% identical if not even more. Of course they added more modern qaulitry of life playablity but they also added some better content to the game to make even more fleshed out in the RPG aspects. This game was a true pleasure to play through in this form. Its a real shame this genre is so lacking and to hear that Dues Ex was getting a new entry only for Embracer group to kill Dues Ex forever after canning the project just a couple months ago. The folks who made Prey have all left the studio. The only hope we have is System Shock 2 remake, System Shock 3 which seems to be in limbo. And maybe a new Bioshock, but with none of the original Bioshock team working on it, I am not holding my breathe.
