The game is fun even on its own without friends. Play the game like a normal round of mini-golf, or enable jumping to pull off stunts and try for that insane hole-in-one shot!

With friends, you can make it as friendly as you want: simply play a normal game of golf with no outside interference and cheer at each other's skillful shots or laugh at the shenanigans, or go full cutthroat and enable collision, turn on power-ups to collect to cripple each other (and yourselves if not careful!)... And when you're finished with the main courses, go grab courses from other players!

I hate comparisons, but it has to be said: If you love the Dark Souls style but hate the PvP aspect, this is definitely the game for you. You can summon "players" but they will be an AI opponent/ally.

This is not a hack-n-slash game, that's for certain. Sure, you're hacking up enemies with all sorts of weapons (even as magic users!) but some enemies you'll want to use a stance for large, sweeping strikes. Others you encounter you'll find you fare better with lighter, quicker swings: the best part is these are not based on the weapon, but rather your stance. Pick up a weapon style you enjoy and go to town, just not too crazy - running out of stamina mid-fight can be the difference of life and death.

Game (not story) differs based on whether you're with friends or alone, too! Take your time solo, or join up with buddies and tackle the missions in a group for faster game play: Each method actually has its own difficulty design, making both routes unique - and actually rather fun! The main downside to group play is when you get to talk to the people, where not everyone gets to hear the dialogue... a problem that becomes apparent if its your first time doing the story. It's usually when one person has to interact to finish a stage or even meeting at the start of one, though.

Punishing in a fair way, combat feels meaningful, and a rather intriguing story. If games that reward skill and patience are your thing, give it a solid go!

(Skip to OPINION and/or ULTIMATUM if you don't care for in-depth description, and would like to see if this game is for you)

Within the first hour of playing this game, I realized two things: this definitely had a 'World of Tanks' vibe to it... that is, rushing head-first into the enemy will ultimately get you killed, no matter what vehicle you're playing.

The second thing that came to mind? This isn't Minecraft... this is more like the gummi ships from Kingdom Hearts, only more land-based! (Personal opinion states I loved that portion of the game, but should've had a game of its own. Moving on.)

That said, the game is (currently) brutal. There are three endings for you in a fight: Victory, Defeat, or Destroyed. Getting in-game money and tech is based on several factors such as spotting, dealing damage, and base capture... but mostly from kills, helping get kills, and reducing the times you see 'destroyed' at the end. New weapons and gear is researched by participating in respective tiers or, for those willing to pay, upgrading tech points into uber tech, and your vehicles are ranked by the parts that are given to them during construction in a garage. You CAN and WILL encounter people who abuse this fact by building vehicles to be placed in lower tiers with high-end weapons and the hated plasma launcher just to either earn RP or convert their tech points with real money, but if you're lucky, you'll spot them first and easily demolish their lightweights, rapidly netting you points. Also, as you get hit, your vehicle will lose blocks, resulting in a loss of mass and vital components such as weapons or even wheels/thrusters/whatever your mode of travel, making it hard or even impossible to move/steer. Expect to be reduced to nothing but your chair if you take too many shots.

There's a few problems about this game at this stage, such as my earlier example of people abusing the tier system or even how punishing the game is to earn your way forward, but my only true gripe about this game is sometimes how flaky it feels the breakaway mechanics work when you have a bulky vehicle, where it feels like you're losing whole sections even when they're all interlocked. This, again, can mainly be attributed to the earlier tiers, where almost any well-placed hit will destroy blocks, but can especially happen if you get hit with a railgun.

OPINION: Fun, but game mechanics and the 'no victory on death' rule make for an interesting, if not sometimes frustrating, challenge. For being labeled "Early Access," I recommend it only on condition that they continue work on the game and do not grant the paying players a combat advantage.

**ULTIMATUM**: Breakaway system often leads to being unable to help team in some situations, no such thing as 'victory' when actually destroyed, and sometimes have to deal with 'smurf' mechs with high-end gear. When you do score multiple victories, it can be moderately paced to advance to higher tiers even as a free player (almost 26 hours in and currently piloting a tier 5 plane.) Being an Alpha, progression/availability subject to change. ALL THESE POINTS CAN BE SEEN AS A POSITIVE/NEGATIVE.

The time-reversal mechanic is applied very well in this game, and some of the stages are actually frustratingly challenging to decipher how to get puzzle pieces. Sadly, the game is much shorter than I expected... but due to the puzzles, it might be longer for others!
