Like you say most of the big mods are on SE, and can offer more is some cases.
I have played them back to back (with similar mod setups) in the past, it's subtle but SE is the better experience in my opinion.

There are no official servers anymore so online play is almost redundant [some private servers exist, but I know little of them], so you won't be able to play with Steam friends unless you're on the same LAN.
As for GFWL, it has never been used for Battlefront. It either utilised Xbox Live or GameSpy [that ceased in Feb 2013].
You have Local Multiplayer or Solo with the AI filling out the teams.
