It's vampire survivors but instead of gathering weapons you gather people that *have* said weapons.

Story is fine, writing is funny, game has a few completely unexpected changeups throughout the main campaign. Much like the game collection it came from, Solace Inc. is a collection of references and mini-stories all welded together with the main story of 'we get paid to shoot things'.

If you're a fan of the genre, pick it up. The screen will definitely get very hectic the longer into a mission you get, but it's a solid, relatively stable game through-and-through.

Also there's lots of boobs, if that's a deal-breaker for you.

This is literally peak fiction.

The story is insane, the characters are insane, the amount of love and affection stuffed into every corner of this game is insane. I wanted another action roguelite, and this didn't just scratch the itch; it's like some aloe vera and mint or something-- I've still got plenty to do despite the fact I've been trying to rush through and unlock everything. The devs have done a great job here: keep cooking, you've got something great here.

Sadly one of those games that drags on just long enough for you to not be able to refund it once you realize you don't want it. There might be a good game in there somewhere, and I may give it a chance in a few years when it finishes its development cycle, but I just cannot recommend it. The 'gunplay' feels boring and uninspired, the movement is clunky-- single player is a struggle but Co-Op doesn't make it any better. Maybe Gunfire wants the game to be more like The Division, or Dark Souls, or even Bloodborne, resulting in a mess of conflicting ideas that don't really work together.

From what I've been told, it's an improvement from the first game. If that's the case, I'm surprised the first sold enough to get a sequel. I'm not a huge fan of the souls-like in general, but this is just one of those games I can't see the appeal of whatsoever, even in that context. I wish the devs the best, because the players that stick around should at least be rewarded for their persistence.

Before I begin, I think you should probably buy the game, whether you intend to play it or not, just to support the absolutely amazing developers at Arcen Games, who are so incredibly passionate and hardworking that I couldn't help but give them as big of a shoutout as I could. Anyhow, onwards into the review.

-Graphics?
Coming into the strategy game genre for pretty games can certainly lead to heartbreak, but I really love the art style in this game, and the soundtrack by Pablo Vega is to die for; I shamelessly mute the music in most RTS games now and just play the soundtrack on loop. In terms of the graphics themselves, the 2d icons while zoomed out, 3d models, planets, and most of the visual effects are pretty enough to not be eye-straining. While I adored the style of AI War: Fleet Command, this upgrade in visuals isn't unwelcome by any means-- sometimes I pause the game to stare at the ships up close and get lost in the designs. If anything, the actual firing of weapons and the projectiles aren't as... flashy or nice as games like Stellaris, but it's a nitpick you probably wont notice in a gigantic battle.

-Audio?
Great SFX and amazing soundtrack, as referenced earlier. Can get a bit loud and muddled in a big battle, and I've found myself going between planets or lowering the volume significantly during engagements, but that is likely just me not tuning my audio correctly.

-Story?
The lore is vast and I find myself intrigued to no end, but the story in AIW2 feels much more hidden and even lacking when compared to its predecessor. While I went into the game looking for a challenge akin to AIW:FC, I still loved the stories of the various factions and the 'dialogue' between your advisors and the minor groups scattered about the galaxy. At least the insults the AI hurls at me are really good.

-Strategy?
I heard the game being described as 'simplified for complexity' and I agree with that wholeheartedly. Compared to the previous game, certain aspects have certainly been 'dumbed down' only to pave the way for far more complex fleet management and fleet combat. While I no longer have to micromanage the building of every ship in my fleet, and being able to upgrade classes of ships and structures through science, and removing the need for building science labs or colony ships or hackers really cut down on the 'monotony' of AIW:FC. I don't feel in any way that this actually made the game any less strategic-- in fact, I believe giving the player the tools to actually strategize and enact their plans without all the original's 'barriers' present allows one to really enjoy the game's AI to the fullest. While I feel this game is easier than the original, I also have played many other RTS games since the release and my playthroughs of AI War: Fleet Command.

-Should I buy it/Will I like it?
Yes, and maybe. Just because I really like the developers do I say buy the game even if it doesn't interest you; but I'd be misrepresenting the game if I acted as though that was the only reason. As with the original, this game's AI is... well... putting the "I" in AI. The number of times that I've accidentally overextended, or inadequately defended, or even neglected the AI and gotten punished heavily for it is staggering. I'll be in a stalemate with the AI, unable to progress, and impatiently decide to strike first, spelling doom for several systems and most of my fleet. Maybe I capture some spire ships and march through their territory, only for the AI to backdoor me and throw some utterly gargantuan reprisal forces towards my terrified and poorly defended backline. The moddability, huge amount of content, and passionate community continues to perpetuate the belief that Indie Games are the future, and 'small' development studios are capable of incredible things. The entire team, both paid and volunteer, deserve a round of applause, a pat on the back, and at *least* a congratulations on such a great project and the strides they've made. I will continue to support the studio for the forseeable future, and (im)patiently await their next game, no matter what it may be.

The ultimate powertrip fantasy, except everything can kill you too. Basically Glass Cannon: The Game, except in space, and with a helluva lot of firepower.

So... it's been over a year since I bought this game. What can I say that someone else hasn't said better? Probably nothing. If you like a giant sandbox chock full of lore, monsters, enemies, allies, and infinite possibilities, go right ahead. Else, the game isn't for you.

Edit: Another thousand hours later, I think I'll put another thousand in by the next time steam asks me to update my review.

Early Access Review
If you like building airships, landships, buildings, or just like watching things shoot at eachother until they explode, this game is for you! Well, it's for anyone... really. The game has nearly infinite replayability and is a great go-to game when you're bored or up for a challenge :P
