First of all may I remind you that it's a cheaper indie title. So please go easy on Studio Sai which only has 9 members to begin with. Jae Hyun Yoo the developer of Eternights & Founder of Studio Sai mentioned that the Persona series was the reason which gave him the courage to leave his full-time job and his inspiration for developing the game. At least he was apparent about it. It's just refreshing to see an indie studio take inspiration from something other than Soulslike or Meteoidvanias games. Although there are quite a number of thematic similarities from Persona, the play style of Eternights is rather similar to that of Scarlet Nexus. This is their first ever project btw, so I'd like to give them my full support.

The story starts with you (namable character) having a conversation together with your bestfriend, Chani. Chani asks you to complete your dating app bio in the hopes of scoring a date. Moments later both of you decided to watch TV out of boredom, then a news about an anti-aging drug called "Eternights" appear to which Chani finds weird. He then switches to another channel about an idol/model named "Yuna" to which both of you simp over her. After a few days Chani discovers a new dating app which matches two people through engaging personality test. After taking the test, a mysterious woman contacts you, which appears to be very flirty, asking you to go on a yacht date. A day goes by, you decided to meet with your so called "destined partner", which unfortunately at the moment you try to meet with her, the world turns into utter chaos. A blue wall starts appearing out of nowhere and people transforming to "infected". Chani tries to contact you and that you should meet up together, and before you know it, both of you get sent to a city shelter.

Eternights is a balance of action RPG and a dating sim. Exploring dungeons, navigating the environment as you fight hordes of infected, solving puzzles & mini games. Improving your relationship with the other characters and finally dating. Unlike Persona, dating only feels like an added bonus for the fans to enjoy the game. Eternights? it takes it to a different degree. The choices in the game definitely counts, so choose wisely. I remember the part on the dating app where I was asked series of questions & preferences about certain things and situations. Through dialogue, you can make choices that do provide some benefits to your Social Stats. Depending on your choice, you can increase your Expression, Confidence, Acceptance, and Courage.

The game control is pretty simple tho.
(X) Button for attacking which then turns into combos upon successive attacks
(RB) Preform a bonus attack at the end of your combo.
(A) Dodging by timely pressing the A button as the red indicator appears on screen,
(LB) Perform a special attack once the special gauge is full (by attacking, successfully evading)

It takes some practice to successfully pull off during the game’s early acts, but you can become a powerhouse later on as you unlock more abilities.

This narrative will easily be what makes or breaks your experience with Eternights. Honestly, if you don’t find yourself connecting with the characters or their cause, the rest of the game falls apart. This is mostly because they make up most of the 10-hour campaign, which is a little short, but with the option of New Game+, secrets, and missed interactions adds to the replayability. What I’m trying to get at is that there are some really strong moments of the narrative that occur during late-game Acts, but getting there requires you to really feel like you are a member of this gang who will not mesh with everyone who plays.

Each party member has a social/relationship rank attached to them, including Chani, who acts more as “wingman” support by helping you raise social stats needed to advance bonds with the other characters. You can strengthen this rank by spending time with the characters. You collect White Essence to bolster stats associated with the party members by training with them or scavenging for items they require. These stats range from increasing health and SP to strengthening their abilities. Black Essence is collected in dungeons and through battling enemies, helping you strengthen your existing sword skills while unlocking new ones. You’re limited at first in how much SP is at your disposal, encouraging you to do a dungeon run in multiple phases to replenish your strength. However, you can power through later dungeons more quickly if you efficiently utilize your skills.

It's not bad but not too good either. I only have few mentionable issues:

• The calendar doesn't seem to disappear even during animations/cutscenes (It would be so much better if it were to be found upon accessing the menu instead)
  
• The dialogue box and interface looks pretty standard. (Having a custom dialogue box & interface gives the game so much personality)
  
• Not sure if it's only me, but the camera angle does make me dizzy from time to time
  
• (More of a suggestion) I wished they used character sprites with different sets of facial expressions during dialouges which makes the conversation more livelier & sharper.
