Very adorable, and with a compelling story with a broader scope than just romance.

This is a very fun game, if you've enjoyed the older Ace Combat titles or arcadey fighter combat games in the past you will probably have a lot of fun with it.

Hitman 2 is an amazing game, with a great sense of humor and many ways to play it. It's a fusion of stealth, puzzle, action games that relies on taking advantage of your environment to kill your targets in ways that range from gruesome to hilarious to poetic. Compared to it's predecessors, in particular the 2016 release, Hitman 2 feels more fleshed out overall. The gameplay feels good and the game is just a joy to play.

fault - milestone two side:above is the direct continuation of fault - milestone one. Just to be clear, milestone one should absolutely be played beforehand.

Milestone two side:above is both very good and very disappointing, in a similar way to its predecessor. The overarching story of the grand journey remains ambitious, and in fact a bold new complication is thrown in that makes it quite a bit more interesting than before, and perhaps justifies the format of the game being a visual novel as opposed to a light novel or manga just a bit despite its continuing lack of interactivity.

If you disliked milestone one for feeling like a pit-stop on what's supposed to be an epic journey, I have bad news. Like its predecessor, side:above tells a story that feels rather slight compared to its grand backdrop. It is a character piece foremost. That's not to say that there aren't interesting developments, there certainly are, but if the journey of fault is to be compared to that of The Lord of the Rings, side:above mostly takes place in Bree. There's a promise of a much larger story, but that larger story continues to play a background part in side:above.

That continues to be perhaps both the most dissapointing aspect of fault as well as its draw, side:above feels almost like a filler episode in the context of a larger series. Like a filler episode though, it focuses on character work. And the character work has become better since milestone one. While milestone one's character story is a bit disjointed, side:above's is a lot more cohesive.

But boy, am I left wanting. If milestone one and side:above were the prologue to an epic tale, I'd marathon the whole thing. But they aren't, they're left to stand on their own, and in that context they're something of a peculiarity. Judging by the present release schedule of fault, this story will likely never get a proper ending at the current pace of 5 to 6 hours of story every 2 or 3 years. You need to be willing to give that up.

That said, the reason I'm left wanting so badly is because of how greatly I enjoy the character work and the world building that is there, fleeting as it might be. That is both my most ringing endorsement and greatest criticism of fault.

What a peculiar game, if you can even call it a game at all. I enjoyed it, but it's definitely not for everyone.

For starters, it's a visual novel, stress on the novel part. The amount of player agency is effectively zero. This story could certainly be told as a manga or light novel. The art however is very well done in my opinion, the characters look stylish, and the music is atmospheric. While they may not make the most of the medium in the way of interactivity, they justify the format around the periphery.

fault - milestone one establishes an interesting world, but tells what feels like a very small story even though it perhaps feels like it sets out to tell a big one. The setup is like something out of a 60 hour RPG or 400 page novel, but it spends a lot of time in the details, and because of that, it doesn't get terribly far in its ~5 hour runtime. It left me wanting for more, both in a good way and a bad way. I can hardly imagine this tale being wrapped up in less than half a dozen releases of this size, and considering 5 years after the fact we're still waiting on the third installment, you need to be willing to embrace a story that won't have a proper ending for a long time, or perhaps ever. Still, the grander story falls as but a background in milestone one, which is a character piece at heart.

Speaking of that, the characters of fault are perhaps its strongest aspect. Strong female leads who aren't either simply defined by their femininity or are female but lack enough characterization for it to matter are an unfortunate rarity in most media. Fault's main cast is estrogen-rich, but don't worry, they're handled maturely and convincingly.

Moreover, I want to see more of these characters. I want to see more of this unique world through the lens of this caste. I wish fault was some 80 hour marathon that had time to both tell its grand story but also these character pieces. It isn't that, and that's perhaps the most disappointing part, but I think that stands as both a compliment and a criticism.

Probably my favorite game of all time. Deep engrossing story, pretty good combat, interesting systems, extremely well-built world. Both of the DLC expansions are also 10/10.
